Legends of Golf Classic - Onion Creek Golf Club

Scott R Chilcutt, June 23, 2013 (Austin, TX)  Back to the "Birthplace of the Senior PGA Tour",  Onion Creek Club, hosted the annual Legends of Golf Classic on the Hill Country schedule. While the points continue to shift standings around, the Summer Series is in full swing and the heat of the season brings out the ice towels.

Small greens, tight fairways and some wind put a premium on accuracy as Giddings, TX player Tom West picked up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Just over 24 hours after picking up his third win on the year at the  HOU - Oakhurst "Open", Houston Tour member Lynn Cormier of Missouri City, TX wouldn't get out of town with just 18 holes.  Andre van der Post of Buda, TX and Cormier would finish the front nine tied up, switch off the leading position three times on the back and finish knotted up for the win.  Six holes later, Cormier would outlast VanDerPost for a double win weekend.  Four strokes back of the pair, San Antonio, TX member Richard Perez rounded out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Playoffs continue, but this one would be completed in one hole.  Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX would make the turn three strokes back, but would add three birdies on the back nine to force extra holes. Fort Hood, TX member Jacob Morton birdied both the first and tenth holes of regular play, finished out the first playoff hole with par and took home his fourth win of the season and sixth on tour.  Two strokes back, Brack Blackwood of Grandbury, TX and Houston Tour member Allan Collier of Sugar Land, TX shared the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Back on top of the points, but a different flight.  Just two events after being promoted from the Sarazen Flight, Rene Realme of San Antonio, TX had a points adjustment to T-3, had his lowest finish of the year and then takes the top spot, and points in the Hogan Flight.  Realme shot a career low round +7 on three birdies to hold on to a seven stroke lead over a pair of San Antonio, TX players, Jay Ellison and Tim Haverly who split the second and third place points.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Grounded for most of the season with a late fall surgery,  Larry Susen of Austin, TX is back and in a big way.  Susen tried an earlier April start in Houston, with little success, but opened his year on the Hill Country Tour with a +5.  With the help of a birdie on the par 4 -5th, Susen picked up his first win on tour with his previous best finish placing 2nd at the 2011 The Legends of Golf Classic.  Hampered with his own health issues, John Hilgers of  Johnson City, TX carded his best finish of the year just three strokes back in the second place position with Houston Tour traveler,  C. Craig Farris of  League City, TX holding the show position.

Sarazen Flight:  Arkansas native, Joshua Douglas, now living in Leander, TX took 25 strokes off his last outing at the May Mr. Nelson Open @ Riverhill for his first win on tour.  With three birdies on the day, Douglas recorded an eight stroke win over a trio tied for second. Newcomer, Greg Hanley of Dripping Springs,TX, Austin, TX member John Cox and CD Dunem, back home after a short stint in Washington, DC shared the second through fourth place points.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Charles Sagray of San Antonio, TX became a first time winner on tour.  With the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 3rd, Sagray held on to a two stroke win over Austin, TX, Order of Merit Points leader Gregg Smith.  The runner up finish was the consistent Smith's best of the points year since his win at the November  Spring Branch Classic @ River Crossing Club.  One stroke back, Gerald Cato of Bastrop, TX rounded out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Frenchman, Xavier Bardy, now living in San Antonio, TX picked up his fourth win on tour and first of the year. Shooting a plus six on the front nine, Bardy won by two strokes over Cedar Park, TX member Joshua Barron.  Barron carded two birdies on the day to edge out Buda, TX member Coy Dayton who had two birdies of his own.

Senior Jones Flight:  Barring any unforseen circumstances at this weekends Red River Shootout, Tom West of Giddings, TX shot himself into a promotion with his +8 finish, fifth win on tour and fourth on the season. Playing along side West, fellow Giddings, TX member Michael Hirsch back on tour after health issues, finished in the runner up spot.  One stroke back of Hirsch, David Castillo of San Antonio, TX finished a strong third for the third time this year.

Snead Flight:  First year member, Larry Atchley of Kyle, TX picked up his first win on tour with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 11th by two strokes.  Leander, TX, Melissa Wood, another first year member, equaled her best finish at the November Las Vegas Vintage Golf Classic with a birdie of her own on the par 3 - 8th hole.  Six strokes back, San Antonio, TX member Carlos Cruz finished in the third place spot.

Senior Snead Flight:    Brett Niles of San Antonio, TX won his sixth event on tour and first since the 2010 ASA - The Republic Golf Club.  With the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 17th, Niles held on to a two stroke advantage over a pair of ties in the second spot.  Dallas Tour member Phillip Tolson of McKinney, TX and Dwain Smith of Cedar Park, TX shared the second and third place points.

Second Austin - Nicklaus Open Treats Hill Country

Scott R Chilcutt, Lakeway, TX (June 8, 2013)  Lakeway, TX a resort area on the south shore of Lake Travis, 25 miles west of downtown Austin began as a retirement and second-home community. Flintrock Falls Golf Club is one of four courses at The Hills at Lakeway complex, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II.  Playing the course with native areas as lateral hazards helped. but tight fairways, blind shots and confusing sight lines proved once again a challenge for the second annual Austin - Nicklaus Open.

Burnie Rodgers took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving in a score card playoff over Bill Matthews.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Richard Perez of San Antonio, TX bounced back from a +7 front nine to shoot even par on the back on two birdies for his second win on tour.  Chris Daniluck of Boerne, TX on break from the tour with the birth of his son, Cameron, birdied the par 4 -14th to get even with Andre van der Post of Port Elizabeth, now residing in Buda, TX to share the second place honors.

Palmer Flight:  Having never seen the course, Jacob Morton of Ft. Hood, TX maneuvered around the layout in even par on the front on two birdies recording his third win on the year and fifth on tour.  One stroke back, San Antonio, TX member Dave Davlin took the runner up finish to stay within 65 points of Morton in the Order of Merit Championship standings.  Tony Eno of Fort Worth, TX birdied the par 5 -18th to slip into the third place spot.

Hogan Flight:  Michael Mathis has won twice on the Am Tour and both wins have come at the Flintrock Falls course.  Mathis, back in San Antonio and back to the tour after a recent deployment carded five birdies on the day to stay one stroke clear of Magnolia, TX resident and Houston Tour Director Jeff Zemencsik.  Zemencsik went out in +3 and parred his last five holes to maintain a five stroke cushion over a pair of players knotted up in the show position.  Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX birdied the par 3 - 2nd and par 4 -4th to share the third place honors with Leander, TX member Bryan Wood after Wood struggled on the final hole of the day.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Houston Tour member, Bill Mathews and his +1 finish equaled his best score on tour for the first time since 2009.  Matthews, another player to have never seen the course had three birdies on the day for his 17th win on tour, 5th of the year on 86 total events. Terry Dennis of Schertz, TX tied his best finish on his first year on tour in the second spot with recently promoted, Austin, TX resident Homer Turbeville rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Ronnie Davis of Converse, TX birdied five holes on the day for his twelfth win on tour and first since his 2011 Major Championship at the Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio.  Five strokes back, first time player Robert Walker of Corpus Christi, TX birdied the par 5 - 16th to record the second place finish, one stroke ahead of Daniel Mcgrath of Austin, TX with his best finish on the year.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Haslet, TX resident and Dallas Tour member Burnie Rodgers brought his easy swing driver to the short and tight layout for his tenth win on tour and first since a self promotion to the Senior Sarazen group.   Houston Tour member Lane McKinney of League City, TX, the winner at the 2012 Austin - Nicklaus Open, started the day with a birdie on the par 4 -1st, but went +9 on the back to split the second place finish with Bastrop, TX player Gene Rampy. Rampy two back going out made up ground on the back nine with six pars.

Jones Flight:  Tom West of Giddings, TX proved once again he doesn't have a problem competing with the younger players.  West, a three time winner on the year, two of those coming when the Jones flight was combined, birdied the par 3 - 6th and par 4 -11th to secure a six stroke cushion over Cedar Park, TX player Joshua Barron.  One stroke back of Barron, David Castillo of San Antonio, TX birdied the par 4 -7th to equal his best finish on the year.

Snead Flight:  Cedar Park, TX member Dwain Smith and Myron Brown of Sommerville, TX  finished regulation play even.  With the course unavailable for a playoff due to darkness, the scorecard playoff went to Smith for his fourth win on tour and second of the year.  Barry Stone, from Del Valle, TX rounded out the top three.
