Early Morning at Silverhorn - Hill Country Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX, (March 24, 2019)  Silverhorn Golf Club was the sight of the Silverhorn Challenge on the Hill Country Tour of the GC AM Tour on Sunday.

With a reduced field, the start times were moved up to ensure no outside play in front of us, which created a challenge for the first few groups.  Overcast skies, led to a late sunrise, so some had a somewhat dark warmup.  Course conditions were good, as normal for the course, but with overseeding operations sure slowed the greens down to a crawl, they were pretty, just very slow.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  James White, made the trip in from San Angelo, TX, worth his while.  Making the turn with a birdie on the par 5 - 10th, White would have plenty to win his first event on tour.  San Antonio, TX, local Steven Salinas took home the runner-up finish.

Palmer Flight:  Austin, TX, resident, Rob Ormand, put a pair of 39's together with the help of consecutive birdies on the par 3 - 13th and par 4 - 14th to pick up his sixth win of the season, in eight attempts.  Two strokes back, Maurice Mintken of Round Rock, TX, with a pair of birdies of his own, took home the second place finish, with Ken Shapiro of Austin, TX, rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Paul Wuerdeman of San Antonio, TX, clearly has enough rounds at the Silverhorn tract to know his way around.  Wuerdeman, with birdies on the par 5 - 6th and par 5 - 15th, grabbed the Championship with three strokes to spare.  Corpus Christi, TX, member Kevin Fontenot, making the trip over from Houston, where he finished in the second place spot the day before, carded a birdie on the par 3 - 13th for an identical result.  One stroke back of Fontenot, Bob Starkman of San Antonio, TX, with two birdies on the day, took the final podium spot.

Sarazen Flight:  With nearly a month under his belt as a new Sarazen Flight player, after a March 1st move, Paul Tyus of Schertz, TX, had a blip his first time out at Delaware Springs, but rebounded with the Championship.  Tyus, with consecutive birdies on 11 and 12, added another on the par 5 - 18th that would prove to be enough for the win.  One stroke back, San Antonio, TX, member James Kohnert, with a couple of birdies on his card, finished seven strokes clear of third place.  The pair of Steve Carter, of San Antonio, TX, back on tour after years off, and Austin, TX, member Chris Cobb, split the third place honors.

Jones Flight:  New Braunfels, TX, member David Garcia, moved one step closer to a performance promotion, carding a +8 - 80 for his National Championship qualifying, third win of the season.  Seven strokes back, Michael Page of Burnet, TX, with two birdies on his round, and Annapolis, MD, member Chris Fountain, shared the runner-up finish.

Snead Flight:  Killeen, TX, resident Jack Iglesias, became another National Championship qualifying three-time winner on the points season.  Iglesias, with a birdie on the par 4 - 9th finished, six strokes clear of Jim Price, of San Antonio, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 4 - 17th, to finish in second.  Copperas Cove, TX, member Dan O'Shea, carded a birdie on the par 5 - 6th to round out the top three.

Classic at the Springs - Hill Country Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Burnet, TX (March 16, 2019)  Delaware Springs, Golf Course, Northwest of Austin, along the edge of the Hill Country, once again hosted the Classic at the Springs.   Unlike the 2017 and 2018 versions, where lightning brought the players off the course, the event went off without a weather hitch.  True to its norm, tight, tough conditions, with excellent green complexes, created another consistent challenge for the members looking to break into the winner's column.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Spring Branch, TX, member, Mark Miller, put a couple of birdies on his card, that would prove to be plenty to pick up his first win of the points season.  Three strokes back, Marshall Morgan of Odessa, TX, with two birdies of his own on the tail end of the front nine, just couldn't keep pace with Miller, coming to the clubhouse.  Rounding out the top three, was Houston Tour traveler, Van Perrin of Kingwood, TX.

Palmer Flight:  Competing in his first event on tour, Justin Winkler, of Temple, TX, carded a pair of birdies on his round, to finish one stroke clear of Austin, TX, member Rob Ormand.  Two strokes out of second place, Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 13th, took the final podium spot.

Hogan Flight:  Making the turn, with a two-stroke advantage, Cody Cauley, of San Angelo, TX, would never look back. Cauley, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, would add another on his final hole of the day, the par 4 - 18th, to go even par on the back.  Six-strokes back, Killeen, TX, resident Randy Dorsey, took home the runner-up honors, with David Huyck of Arvada, CO in the area to see family, rounding out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Brian Shirley, of Marble Falls, TX, became another first-time tour winner on the day.  Shirley, with a pair of 43's, made the turn with a four-stroke advantage and held on for a four-shot victory.  Waco, TX, member Kyle Lewie, matched Shirley on the back, but couldn't make up any ground, finishing in the runner-up spot, with Bob Starkman, of San Antonio, TX, taking home third, one stroke back.

Sarazen Flight:  Making a trio of players on top of the podium for the first time, Scott Smith of Temple, TX, down two-strokes making the turn, poured in on over the final nine holes for a three-stroke victory.  Kyle, TX, member Larry Atchley, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, cleared a pair of players knotted up in third, by five strokes.  Chris Cobb, of Austin, TX, and traveling DFW Tour member, Rodney Wren of Dallas, TX, shared the final podium finish.

Jones Flight:  Llano, TX, member Charles Watson, always a threat in this part of the state, bested his 2018 victory score at Delaware Springs, by three strokes for the repeat.  Two shots back, Bobby Ashcraft of  San Antonio, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 14th, finished two-strokes clear of third-place finisher, Reupena Aivao, of Killeen, TX.

Snead Flight  Michael Allen of Sequin, TX, down a stroke after nine, cleared the flight by five-strokes on the back, for the Championship.  Paul Ray of Midland, TX, and San Antonio, TX, member Gene Hanley, with a birdie on the par 3 - 7th split the runner-up finish.

Prelude - Houston Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Richmond, TX (March 8, 2019)  Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club, hosted the Prelude - Houston Open Sweetwater on the Golf Channel AM Tour, Houston Tour schedule.  Players from 23 different tours, traveling from throughout the country, used the event as a warmup, to the Major Championship at Sweetwater Country Club, over the weekend.

The club, back on the schedule for the second consecutive season, was wet.  Rains over the past month, have wreaked havoc on Houston courses, but the lack of sun has caused more problems, than the rainfall.  The tight track, meanders through the homes of Pecan Grove, in Richmond, TX.  And on this Friday, the winds swirling and deceptive winds, seemed to cause as much damage to the scorecard as the wet conditions.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  An even par - 72, couldn't hold on for the win, our last time at the club, but Thomas Cruickshank, of nearby Richmond, TX, made his +5 works this time around.  Cruickshank, with two birdies on the front side, edged out Spring, TX, member David Ortego, and Ron Finnerty, of San Antonio, TX, by a single stroke.  Ortego with a single birdie on the round, and Finnerty, with a pair, shared the runner-up finish.

Palmer Flight:  Stating that he hasn't been able to adjust his game to a lower weight class, Albuquerque, NM, traveler Dan Frampton, sure didn't show it.  Frampton, with a pair of birdies on the round, played his final nine holes, in even par, to pick up the Championship, three strokes clear.  Beaumont, TX, player Scott Mays with a birdie of his own.  Three strokes out of second, the pair of Terrance Ream, of Reno, NV, and Houston, TX, member Rafael Rivero, split the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Down two strokes making the turn, Tony Thibodeaux of Port Arthur, TX, bested the field on the back nine for his first win on tour.  Thibodeaux, with a birdie on the par 5-4th, finished two strokes clear of Corpus Christi, TX, member Kevin Fontenot. Fontenot with a birdie of his own on the round, finished two strokes clear of Paul Atkinson of Bryan, TX, rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 10th hole, Spring Hill, TN, member Cliff Austin, and John Moyle of Oakdale, CA, made the turn even up, but that would be the end of the tie. On the par 4 - 1st, Austin took the lead and never looked back, making the most of a pair of birdies on the day for the win.  Moyle would finish the round, twelve strokes out of the lead, in second place, with Montgomery, TX, member Joe Michetti, taking the third place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Three players, finished the day knotted in the top spot, send the trio back to the course for extra holes.  Sudden death, wouldn't take long, when Naperville, IL, traveler Stanley Mitchell, would pick up his first win of the season, on the first extra hole.  Olan Benge, of Wharton, TX, with two birdies on his day, and Missouri City, TX, player Dale Fuhr, would be relegated to sharing the runner up finish.

Jones Flight:  Beginning the round, on the tenth hole, Pete Partain of Bedford, TX, and Houston, TX, member Blake Barnes, would make the turn even up.  Both with birdies on the par 4 - 1at,  then would swap the lead a couple of times before Partain would solidify the championship on the final hole.  Barnes, finished in the runner-up spot, with Jackson, TN, player Louis Ralph, rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:   Down a stroke at the turn, making most of a birdie on the par 3 - 12th, Denis Corleto of Waller, TX, would make up four strokes coming to the clubhouse to win the event.  Three strokes back, Akron, OH, traveler John Casady recorded the runner-up finish with Palm Springs Tour member, Larry Polete, of Banning, CA, taking home the final podium spot.

Windy but Warm in The Quarry

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (February 17, 2019)  The San Antonio Winter Championship found it's way back to The Quarry Golf Club.  The club, nearest to downtown San Antonio, features a unique setting, with the back nine built in a 100-year-old quarry pit. Winds out of the north, played havoc on front nine play, up on the hill, but warmer than our last time out at Comanche Trace, was comfortable.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Midland, TX, player, Zach Winkler led the field from start to finish.  Winkler, without a birdie on the round, carded a steady pair of 38's, for his first win on tour.  Three strokes back, Rusty Lippert of Copperas Cove, TX, with three birdies on his round, finished in the runner-up spot, with San Antonio, TX, resident, Ron Finnerty, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Tied up at the turn, after starting on ten, John Franklin of San Antonio, TX, carded the low score on his back nine, to pick up his first win of the season.  San Antonio, TX, player Dave Davlin, a winner his last time out in the windblown, Coastal Bend Championship, took the second place finish, with the help of a birdie on the par 4-3rd. One stroke back of Davlin, Tony Eno of Spring, TX, also a winner his last time out, in Katy, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:   Five strokes back, making the turn, Austin, TX, member Rob Ormand, played his back nine in +2 with a birdie on the par 4 - 7th, to pick up his third win on tour, all coming in his first season.  The winner at the frozen Kerrville Winter Championship, Maurice Mintken of Round Rock, TX, finished three strokes back, for his second runner-up of the season.  Dallas Tour traveler, Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Playing in his fourteenth round of the points season, Randy Dorsey, of Killeen, TX, overcame a two-stroke deficit making the turn to pick up his first win of the season.  Dorsey, with pars on six of his final seven holes, finished four strokes clear of a trio of players tied up in the runner-up spot. San Antonio, TX, members John Heintz and Les Costales, along with Michael Campbell of New Braunfels, TX, split the second place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Chicago Tour traveler, Pete Murphy of Lake In The Hills, IL, down two strokes making the turn after starting on the par 4 - 10th, made up the ground with a pair of birdies coming to the clubhouse for his second win of the points season, after taking home the Major Championship win in Monterrey, CA in November.  A two-time winner on the season, Scott Harrelson of Portland, TX, with two birdies on his card, and Montgomery, TX, resident Bob Goodside shared the runner-up finish, three strokes back.

Sarazen Flight:  With a birdie on the par 4-9th, Trevor Colen of San Antonio, TX, took a four-stroke advantage to the back nine and was able to cruise home for his first win on tour, with three strokes to spare.  Corpus Christi, TX, member Damian Shipley, with a birdie of his own on the par 5-15th, settled in for the second place finish, with Michael Betzale, of San Antonio, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Terry Everts, of Eastland, TX, spending the week in the Hill Country after playing in Kerrville, made the most of visit, picking up his first win of the season, clearing the field by five strokes.  Clive, IA, traveler, Mike Murray and Tres Paxton of Boerne, TX, with a birdie on the par 4-4th, split the runner-up honors.

Jones Flight:  Kevin Montague of Spring, TX, with a birdie on the par 3-3rd, picked up his second win in as many attempts, after his Championship at the Katy Classic the previous Sunday. New Braunfels, TX, player David Garcia, with a birdie on the par 4-14th, finished one stroke back and two ahead of a pair on his heals.  Baltimore Tour traveler, Chris Fountain of Annapolis, MD, and Schertz, TX, player Paul Tyus, split the third-place finish.

Snead Flight:   Two in a row, of Selma, TX, player Mark Colwell.  Colwell, finished a great round in the cold at Comanche Trace, the previous Saturday, and added to his win total, with a birdie on the par 4-4th, by six strokes.  Runner-up, Jack Iglesias, of Killeen, TX, with a birdie on the par 3-16th, finished three strokes clear of Midland, TX, player Paul Ray, rounding out the top three.
