Delaware Springs Jumps on the Hill Country Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Burnet, TX (March 22, 2015)  Some 50 miles Northwest of Austin and 100 miles North of San Antonio, lies Burnet.  The small farming and ranching community, once a a major railhead to the west, with the Austin and Northwestern Railroad sitting on the edge of the Texas Hill Country.

Delaware Springs Golf Course, built on land donated by a local family rolls across the spring-fed Delaware creek into the hillsides making you feel like you're traversing a Hill Country Ranch.  While the small town remote feel may seem to be small time, the competition was big time for the Classic at the Springs on the Hill Country Tour.

Christopher Cobb, carding his best score in his first year on tour, took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Jordan Massey of Killeen, TX playing in only his second event on tour started the round with birdies on two of the first three.  Stumbled on the par 4 - 4th, but then went the next twelve holes -1 with a birdie on the par 4 - 12th.  Trying to stay with Massey, Fort Worth, TX player Sean Fenton recovered from a first hole double with three birdies on the front side to tie things up after nine.  In the end, Massey was just too consistent on the back picking up his first win.  Fenton would end up two strokes back, with  Robert Jackens of Salado, TX rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:   Playing just in front of the camera crew commotion, Jacob Morton of Fort Hood, TX kept his nose to the grindstone, playing the back in +2 with no big numbers on the card to win his eighth event on tour including three Major Championships.  Two strokes back, the center of the film groups attention, Little John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX, to be seen on a Golf Channel Profile soon, handled that focus well, making a birdie on the par 4 - 17th to finish second.  Playing in his ninth round of the points season, Coupland, TX player Chris Wadle took home the show place honors.

Hogan Flight:   Going out in +8 over the front nine, Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX found his game on the back nine, with birdies on the par 4 - 15th and par 4 - 17th to shoot -1 on the back for a seven stroke victory.  It was Matthews' eighth win on tour and second of the points season.  Converse, TX resident,  Ronnie Davis took a single stroke lead to the back nine, but couldn't keep pace, settling for the runner up finish, with Manuel Martinez of Cisco, TX notching the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:   With two players in the clubhouse tied for the lead, Nacho Orozco of San Antonio, TX followed with a +4 on the back nine to dampen any playoff hopes. It was Orozco's third event on tour and first win. Three strokes back, Matt Bohmfalk of Temple, TX on hiatus from the tour for the past two years carded three birdies on the day to tie up San Antonio, TX member, Angel Morales Jacquez for the runner up spot.

Jones Flight:  Joe Tyson of Austin, TX took six strokes off his front nine score coming to the clubhouse with the help of a bomb of a putt and birdie on the 3 - 13th to pickup his third win on tour and first of the season.  San Antonio, TX player Phil Lewis made par on his final hole of the day to square up the round with Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX sharing the second place honors.

Snead Flight:  Playing in his first year on tour, Christopher Cobb of Austin, TX made birdies on the par 5 - 8th and par 3 - 16th to command a ten stroke advantage for his first time on top of the podium. Del Valle, TX member Barry Stone made par on the eighteenth to edge into the runner up finish, with Tom Hill of Boerne, TX off the tour since 2012 back to his up front finishes, securing third place.

Texas Open @ Horseshoe Bay

Scott R Chilcutt, Horseshoe Bay, TX (March 8, 2015)  The Texas Open, known for some crazy spring weather in the Hill Country, once again held true to form.  While, mild temperatures and little to no wind was a nice change, the rain threats on Sunday kept the tensions high.  Those rains would ultimately hold off, for the most part, until the players made their way home, trending the event to one of the best in early March.

While entirely hosted at the CapRock facility over the past four years, Apple Rock stayed on the rotation, but the Ram Rock course (and required shotgun) was moved down the hill and across the street to the Robert Trent Jones, SR, Slick Rock Course.  With the changes, scores over the two day Major, the first of the year in the South Central Region, showed for more play-ability.

$1,460 was raised for David Feherty's Troops First Foundation by participants in the 50/50 raffle.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Despite three triples on Sunday,  Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX, built enough cushion with a four birdie, +1 - 73 on Saturday to pick up his seventh win on tour and second Major Championship.  One stroke back, Corey Freeland of Houston, TX made three birdies on the weekend for the runner up spot, with Dallas, TX resident, Cameron Kirkpatrick just another stroke back for the final National Championship qualification finish.

Senior Championship Flight:  2013 Senior National Champion, Bob Brooks of Bella Vista, AR, played his final eight holes of the weekend in minus 2 with the help of four birdies to force a playoff with Kermit, TX player, Daniel Desilets.  On the first extra hole of the sudden death, Brooks would keep the birdie train rolling for his first win on the season and eighth on tour.  Edmond, OK traveler, Al Swanson carded five birdies on the weekend to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Keith Childress of Diana, TX took eight strokes off his first day finish with the help of two birdies on the Slick Rock layout to pick up his first win on tour over a trio of players two strokes back.  Chris Morea of Marietta, GA, with a string of two birdies on the par 4 -4th and par 5 - 5th on Sunday,  Fort Hood, TX member Jacob Morton, with eagle on the par 5 - 5th and Brack Blackwood of Granbury, TX, with a couple of birdies on the weekend would all share the runner up honors and final National Championship invitations.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Battling back problems, Al Smith of Midland, TX recorded four birdies for a flight low round on Sunday at Slick Rock to pick up his eleventh win on tour and third Major Championship.  Three strokes back, Iraan, TX member Doug Collins, already a winner on the points season made eagle 2 on the par 4 18th on Saturday to take home the second place prize, with Herb Reynolds of Montgomery, TX and Copperas Cove, TX player Robert Lippert with three birdies on the front nine Sunday, splitting the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Scott Harper of Ranger, TX led from wire to wire to pick up his eleventh win on tour, second of the season and first Major Championship.  Harper made four birdies on the weekend to finish three strokes ahead of first year player, Derek Matta of Sugarland, TX.  Tomball, TX member James Sheppeard finished one stroke back of Matta for the final National Championship qualification.

Senior Hogan Flight:  In only his second time out since a flight promotion, Will Whitley of Cypress, TX became a three time winner on tour and his first Major Championship.  Whitley, started the final round tied for the lead and steady play vaulted him to a six stroke victory over fellow Houston Tour member, Christopher Phillips of Richmond, TX.  George Smith of Magnolia, TX and Boerne, TX resident, Steve Trickel shared the show place finish and final Senior National Championship invitations.

Sarazen Flight:  Coming off his first win in over a year, just two weeks prior, Scott Thompson of Helotes, TX let his confidence shine through for his first Major Championship. Thompson shot a flight low round on Sunday to win by ten strokes over Rick Smalley of College Station, TX and Live Oak, TX player Michael Hill

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Wharton, TX member, Larry Viktorin made the weekend a lucky # thirteenth win and first Major Championship.  Viktorin, coming off a win his last time out at the Golf Club of Houston Redstone Classic played just outside the lead group after the Saturday round, did just enough on the Apple Rock course to grab the one stroke victory. Nicky Baugh from Alto, TX shot the flight low round on Sunday to vault his way into a share of the runner up spot with Ballwin, MO player Les Edwards.

Jones Flight:  Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX came off his first win as a Jones Flight player two weekends ago and shot a flight low round on Sunday to overcome a three stroke deficit.  Fleming defended his 2014 Texas Open Championship now winning the event two times in two different flights.  One stroke back, John Grossenbacher of Austin, TX now has three events on tour, two seconds to go with a win. Bakersfield, CA traveler, Don Risnerplaying in his fourteenth event on the points year, rounded out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  Atascocita, TX player David Sipe defended his 2014 Texas Open Championship that helped him win the Houston Tour Flight Championship picking up his fifth win on tour.  Three strokes back, Mike Murphy of Corrigan, TX vaulted his way into the runner up spot with the Sunday low Flight round.  California Sacramento / Central Tour member Richard Bernard of Rocklin, CA took home that last Senior National Championship invitation.

Snead Flight:  Bobby Ashcraft of San Antonio, TX picked up his third win in as many attempts and first Major Championship.  Ashcraft, with the help of seven birdies on the weekend built a seven stroke advantage over Corpus Christi, TX member William Speck, with two birdies of his own.  William Hughes of Tulsa, OK rounded out the top three.

Senior Snead Flight:  Alan Brumley of Atascocita, TX built a big lead after his Saturday round on Slick Rock and held off a hard charging Kerrville, TX player John Merritt for the win.  It was Brumley's eighth win on tour, fourth consecutive and first Major Championship.  Art Henry of Victoria, TX finished in third for his best finish at a Major Championship.

Comanche Trace for the Kerrville Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Kerrville, TX (February 21, 2015)   Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, Kerrville, just northwest of San Antonio along the Guadalupe River, brings players from around the state and country for the Golf Channel AM Tour Kerrville Championship. Playing host to the event, The Club @ Comanche Trace, started off another calender year on tour in fine fashion.  Unlike February's past, where the wind chilled your bones to the core, this Saturday had little to no winds to go with mid 70 temperatures.   A three year break in the over seeded fairways made things play hard and fast but like each year the fast and smooth bent grass greens were where the event was won.

With the speed of the greens running just under 12 on the stimpmeter, players had to either get to the right side of the hole, or make some phenomenal putts. Mark Colwell took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving and Michael Kirk took advantage of the Srixon Ball challenge by winning his flight with a Srixon.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:    Formerly playing out of the San Diego Tour, Redmond Lyons, now residing in San Antonio while attending Trinity University made little to no mistakes on the day. Lyons, with only one bogie, carded six birdies, three on each side to win his first event on tour with a -5 / 67.  Ten strokes back, first time tour player, Jordan Massey of Killeen, TX made three birdies on his round for a solid runner up finish.  19 year old, Cole Evans of Greenwood Village, CO, finished just one stroke back of the second place spot with the help of five birdies on his round.

Palmer Flight:   With the flight starting the day on the tenth hole, five of the eleven players were tied with +2 - 38's, with another only one back.  Making the turn to the Valley Course, Fernando Davila of San Antonio, TX was able to just hold off two of the group, for his first win in his first event on tour.  Another pair of San Antonio residents locked up the runner up honors,  Patrick Weathersby, with an eagle on the par 5 - 18th (his ninth hole), would add birdies on the par 4 - 5th and par 4 - 15th, but barely held on to a hard charging Dave Davlin who played his back nine in +1 with two birdies.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Robert Lippert of Copperas Cove, TX kept up his winning ways, making it three in a row on the points season.  Lippert carded an eagle on the par 5 - 4th allowing him a one stroke cushion going to the back nine over San Antonio, TX member Morgan Splichal and held on to a two stroke advantage.  Splichal, made three birdies on his front nine, but just couldn't keep the momentum of an under par run over seven holes, settling for second place.  Little John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX finished in the third spot, his best finish since being promoted to the Senior Palmer Flight.

Hogan Flight:  In his fifth year on tour, Dallas Tour member, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX shot a career low round, + 3 - 75 for his tenth win on tour.  Harper with three birdies, finished the day four strokes ahead of San Antonio, TX player Micah Carroll.  It was Carroll's best finish on tour. Joshua Douglas of Leander, TX rounded out the top three, three strokes out of the runner up spot.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Manuel Martinez of Cisco, TX made the turn two strokes back, birdied the par 4 - 10th and par 4 - 11th to take the lead and never look back for his second win on tour in his first season.  Tim VanLandingham of Portland, TX, with two birdies on the day and Champion of the Hawaii Amateur Championship, along with Paul Wuerdeman of San Antonio, TX finished the day sharing runner up honors, three strokes back.

Sarazen Flight:  It took a playoff in the largest flight of the day to settle the score.  With both Melissa Wood of Leander, TX and Helotes, TX member Scott Thompson all square after the front nine, Wood carded birdies on the par 4 -11th, par 3 -12th and par 4 - 16th to take the lead.  On his final hole of the afternoon, Thompson made birdie on the par 5 - 18th to square things up again.  Back to the course for the sudden death, Thompson would pick up his sixth win on tour and first since January 2014.  Katy, TX, Houston Tour member, Kristopher Bixby would round out the top three, five strokes back.

Senior Sarazen:  James McKee of Abilene, TX birdied his ninth hole of the day the par 5 - 18th, played his back nine in +2 and led the field by three strokes.  It was the third win on the season in four attempts for McKee, punching his ticket to the Senior National Championships.  First time player Steve Hamilton of Leander, TX and Euless, TX resident,  Tom Stockton split the runner up honors.

Jones Flight:  Canyon Lake, TX member, Michael Kirk birdied his second hole of the day, the par 4 -11th, and finished up with a birdie on the par 4 - 5th and par 4 - 9th to pick up his second win in an many attempts.  Seven strokes back the trio of  Daryl Nixon of Taylor, TX, with two birdies on the round,   Houston, TX player Artis Stewart, with one birdie on his back nine and Larry Atchley of Kyle, TX split the second place honors.

Snead Flight:   Mark Colwell of Selma, TX birdied the par 4 - 11th and finished his round with another birdie at the par 4 - 9th for his ninth win on tour and first of the season.  Two strokes back, Austin, TX first year member, Christopher Cobb matched his T2 finish at the Port Aransas Open with a couple of birdies on his round. Stan Harper of Lake Leon, TX rounded out the top three in his sixth event of the points season.

Pirates of the AM Tour at the Port Aransas Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Port Aransas, TX (January 24, 2015)  Port Aransas, the only town established on Mustang Island, one of the longest barrier islands on the Texas Coast has become a beach, resort and fishing town.  In the early 19th century, it was a haven for pirate ships searching for riches and local lore tells of treasures buried there.

Palmilla Beach Golf Club, a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, designed by Arnold Palmer, takes advantage of the rugged wind-swept coastline consistent with links golf.  That layout and the links effect, seemed to feel more like its Scotland predecessors when over 75% of the players took to a practice round on Friday.  Cold north winds along with cloudy, dreary skies would make up what could only assist in a view of the layout.   Tournament day welcomed some sunshine and different wind directions, which would only offer players that had been to track, insight into some of the blind and narrowing shot placements.

With no eagles on the day and just a mere 53 birdies, the course took its toll on players with over 77% of the scores at bogey or worse.  In the Tournament Champion Award, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, it took a scorecard playoff for Michael Kirk to beat out Damian Shipley for the trophy.  Steve Killion (Senior Hogan), Greg Faubion (Senior Sarazen), Michael Kirk (Jones Flight) and Bobby Ashcraft (Snead Flight) took advantage of the Srixon ball promotion and will get an extra dozen sent to them for winning their respective flights.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Granbury, TX player Eric Anderson took advantage of four birdies on the day to make the trip from the Dallas Tour worth while.  It was Eric's fourth win on tour and first on Texas soil after winning three on the New Mexico Tour in 2012.  Josh Stout of Houston, started the day on the rough side after overnight car troubles, but played the back nine in +1 with three birdies to finish in the runner up spot, three strokes back.  Marc Duncan, recently relocated to Texas from Sanford, NC, birdied his final hole to share the third place honors with Mike Terry of Round Rock, TX and Del Rio, TX member Rich Weatherby.

Palmer Flight:  Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX used three birdies on the day to fire one of only a few sub 80 rounds for his fifteenth win on tour.  Just behind Davlin found three promoted Hogan / Senior Hogan flight players.  Runner up, Iraan, TX resident Doug Collins the winner in the Senior Palmer Flight at the two day South Texas Winter Championship stayed on course, with a pair of birdies to finish five strokes back. Bruce Beakley of Houston, another GolfNow performance promotion player and Spring, TX, self promoted Hogan Flight player, Aaron Brougher shared the third place finish.

Hogan Flight:  San Antonio, TX member, Todd VanDerSchaegen, carded three birdies on the day, including his final hole, par 5 - 18th to pick up the hardware.  James Sheppeard of Tomball, TX, recorded his second runner up in as many attempts, just one stroke shy, with birdies on the par 5 - 5th and par 5 - 10th holes.  San Antonio, TX resident, John Heintz birdied the par 3 - 2nd, picking up a closest to the hole award and show position points.

Senior Hogan Flight:  In a tale of two nines, Sanger, TX member Steve Killion, a 2015 points year promoted player, took fifteen strokes off his first nine score and came to the clubhouse in +1 on the back to pick up his ninth win on tour and second of the season.  Chris Neelley of Spring, TX strung together five pars during the middle of his round to finish three strokes out of the win.  Boerne, TX member Steve Trickel and Tim VanLandingham from nearby Portland, TX split the third place points.

Sarazen Flight:  Damian Shipley of Corpus Christi, TX made the best of some home cooking to notch his fourth win on tour.  Shipley, with a birdie on the par 3 - 2nd finished his back nine in +2 for the nine stroke advantage.  Boerne, TX member, Rudy Cantu matched his best finish on tour a T2 at the November, Las Vegas, The Chase Championship.  Three strokes back the trio of  Kristopher Bixby of Katy, TX, The Woodlands, TX player Patrick Richardson and first time player Nacho Orozco of San Antonio, TX shared the third place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Richmond, TX player Greg Faubion went even par over six holes in the middle of his round with the help of a birdie on the par 3 -2nd to win his third event on tour and second in as many attempts.  Eight strokes back, Dallas Tour member, Ray Blackshear of Hideaway, TX held off Jim Craig of San Felipe, TX for the runner up finish, by one stroke after Craig made par on his final two holes to round out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Michael Kirk of Canyon Lake, TX made birdie on the par 4 - 15th to finish his front nine in +3.  Kirk, would make a mess of his middle rounds but finished -2 over his last four holes to pick up his first win on tour.  Huntsville, TX player Neil Macdonald played his normal steady round to finish in the runner up spot with Portland, TX member James Price finishing in the third place position.

Snead Flight:   San Antonio, TX player Bobby Ashcraft turned his round about on the back nine, taking six strokes off for his fourth win on tour and second in as many attempts after winning the South Texas Winter Championship in December.  A threesome of players carded runner up finishes, with Christopher Cobb of Austin, TX, Lake Leon, TX player Stan Harper and  Mark Colwell of Selma, TX splitting the second place honors.

Senior Snead Flight:   Seven pars on the day would be just enough for Alan Brumley of Atascocita, TX to return home with his sixth Championship on the AM Tour.  Two strokes back, Victoria, TX resident, Art Henry would birdie the par 3 - 2nd to help make up a three stroke deficit on the first nine to finish in a tie for second with John Merritt of Kerrville.
