Scott R Chilcutt, Round Rock, TX (March 1, 2013) Tuning up for the first major of the spring in the areas at Horseshoe Bay, 72 players hit the links for the Round Rock Open. The season opening event in the Austin area, typically held up the hill at Teravista Golf Club, was moved off that hill in an attempt to reduce the spring winds.
Forest Creek Golf Club, just around the corner from the Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express, off the tour since 2009 proved worthy of a spot on the schedule. Despite the tight fairways, where out of bounds comes into play on all 18 holes, course staff cooperation of the limited field with threesomes and split tees guaranteed an excellent pace of play.
Cathay McGee shot a career low round to command the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Al Smith of Midland, TX got off to a slow start, but played the final twelve holes in one over par with the help of two birdies to take his seventh win on tour and first of the year. One stroke back, nineteen year old San Antonio, TX player Texas Harper, with three birdies of his own, was one stroke back after the front nine and couldn't make it up on the back. Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX rounded out the top three.
Palmer Flight: After coming off of two runner up finishes in his last two outings and four of his first six events, Nash Armstrong of Killeen, TX broke through for his first win on tour. Armstrong played the front nine in +3, birdied the par 5 - 12th en route to a three stroke win over a pair of players in second. Back after taking the 2013 season off, Scott Williams of College Station, TX tied up first time player Kody Cundy of San Antonio, TX for the runner up finish.
Hogan Flight: Local Round Rock, TX player Jorge Rodriguez broke the winning drought for his ninth win on tour and first since the 2012 Texas Masters at Barton Creek. Starting on the back nine, Rodriguez, played his front nine in +3, with birdies on the par 5 - 12th, added one on the par 4 -2nd to hold off Houston Tour member Jeff Burke by a stroke. Burke, with consecutive birdies on the par 5 - 16th and par 3 - 17th held enough of a front nine lead to fend off a pair of players one stroke back. Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX and San Antonio, TX player Kevin Curfman shared the third place honors.
Senior Hogan Flight: Portland, TX first year member, Tim VanLandingham picked up his first win on tour, in his second attempt. Tim, birdied the par 3 -14th to finish his first nine in +6 holding a three stroke advantage that would hold up on the back over John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX. James McKee from Abilene, TX and Salado, TX member Jerry Smith split the show position finish four strokes back of Hilgers.
Sarazen Flight: Washington, DC traveler Rick Houchins has been taking advantage of the business trips to Houston over the winter, picking up his second win in as many attempts. Houchins, a winner at the December Cinco Ranch Holiday Classic, played the front nine clean before struggling on the back, but outlasted a pair tied in the second place finish. Houston Tour member, Greg Smith of Cypress, TX carded three birdies on the day to tie up Helotes, TX player Scott Thompson, with two birdies of his own, splitting the runner up finish.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Charles Sagray of San Antonio, TX overcame a double on the first hole, playing the final seventeen in +5 for a three stroke win, his third on tour. Winner in his last two outings, Austin, TX player Michael Brewer picked up birdies on the par 4 - 2nd and par 4 - 11th before running into trouble on the par 4 - 15th for the runner up finish. Jerry Gallemore of Fort Stockton, TX, back after limited play in 2013 rounded out the top three.
Jones Flight: San Antonio, TX player Xavier Bardy birdied his ninth hole of the day to take a one stroke lead over Aaron Seafous of Austin, TX. Both players matched each other on the back nine, for Bardy's fifth win on tour. Seafous, with two birdies on the day including the par 5 - 4th recorded her third runner up finish in the 2014 points season. Taking a break over the winter with a new addition to the family, Mark Rivera of San Antonio, TX, the 2013 Jones Flight points champion, finished third.
Snead Flight: After outlasting two players for a playoff win at the Kerrville Championship, Cathay McGee of Houston, TX made it two for two. McGee, with a +11 - 83 nearly lapped the field, with the nearest competitor, Paul Harper of San Antonio, fifteen strokes back. First year member, D Nair of Austin, TX and Selma, TX player Mark Colwell split the third place honors.

Scott R Chilcutt, Kerrville, TX (February 15, 2014) The Club @ Comanche Trace, in Kerrville, TX starts off the calendar year once again, on the Hill Country Tour. Over seeded fairways along with fast and smooth bent grass greens play host to the mid February start date. With the warmest temperatures of the event's history, one thing didn't change, the winds. Calm until all the signage and scoring area was set up, the breezes met the players at the range and only let up after everything was torn down.
A tie for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving between Carlos Cruz and Robi Jalnos was settled with a score card playoff with Cruz taking home the special award.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Mark Miller of Bulverde, TX birdied four holes in route to a four stroke win over a pair tied in the runner up spot. Miller notched his second win of the season and sixteenth on tour over Castroville, TX member Reagan Rothe and Chris Daniluck of Boerne, TX.
Senior Championship, first year member Mike Harkins of Cedar Park, TX took the low senior score and grabbed the trophy after a late Open Championship player withdrew from the event combining the Open and Championship divisions.
Senior Palmer Flight: San Antonio, TX resident Morgan Splichal picked up his first win on tour, but it took extra holes to seal the deal. Paul Wuerdeman also from San Antonio, matched Splichal on the front nine, looked to have the win in the bag through the fifteenth hole, but Splichal would par out on his final five holes to force the extra frames. On the first hole of the playoff the pair had troubles, but Morgan would out last the pair for the trophy. Gary Grizzle of Boerne, TX finished four strokes back in third place.
Hogan Flight: Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX got back to the winner circle with the help of three birdies for his first win since the December 2012 Winter Classic - Hill Country. Matthews, a runner up at the 2012 Kerrville Championship, opted for a Houston Tour event in 2013, returned to Comanche Trace to record his fourth win on tour, four strokes ahead of Kevin Curfman of San Antonio, TX. Curfman, idle on tour since 2012. San Antonio member, John Heintz, with three birdies of his own rounded out the top three.
Senior Hogan Flight: Wimberly, TX member John Hilgers starting on the tenth tee, came to the clubhouse +1 on his final nine, carding two birdies for a seven stroke win, his third on tour. Larry Susen in the runner up spot, matched Hilgers on the back, with three birdies including his final hole the par 4 - 9th to hold off a pair tied in the third spot. Robi Jalnos and Steven Turner, both from San Antonio, shared the third place honors one stroke shy of second.
Sarazen Flight: Devin Brown of San Antonio, TX started the day hot, -1 after five holes but stumbled on the final holes of the front and back nines, but held on for his sixth win on tour and second in as many attempts. Playing along side Brown, San Antonio member C.D. Dunem finished out his round with a pair of pars, one stroke short of first and holding off a pair behind him. Visiting Houston Tour player Kristopher Bixby of Katy, TX and Helotes, TX player Scott Thompson split the third and fourth place points.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Austin, TX native, Michael Brewer birdied the par 3 - 3rd for his third win on tour and second in a row. Brewer a winner his last time out at the Winter Classic - Hill Country and the two day, Dallas Tour Championship @ The Tribute last August, paced the field with a seven stroke advantage over Gene Rampy of Bastrop. Donna Brady of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX and Live Oak, TX member Richard Huyck shared the third pace honors, two strokes back of Rampy.
Jones Flight: Carlos Cruz of San Antonio, TX picked up his fifth win on tour. Birdies on the par 5 - 4th and par 3 - 17th was more than enough for a five stroke victory over San Antonio resident Xavier Bardy. Bardy finished his round at +1 over his final six holes to stay ahead of Leander, TX member Melissa Wood solidly in final podium spot.
Snead Flight: For the second playoff of the day, it took three to break the tie. Somerville, TX member Myron Brown, Paul Harper of San Antonio, TX and Houston, TX player Cathay McGee headed back to the tenth hole to settle the score. In the end, McGee took the top spot for her fifth win on tour, including the 2012 Kerrville Championship at Comanche Trace, while Brown and Harper shared the runner up finish.

Scott R Chilcutt, Las Vegas, NV (February 2, 2014) The 11th Annual Duel in the Desert, the second largest event on the Golf Channel Am Tour with a field of 432 players (216 teams), was held at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. The three day team event, held on the 54 hole Pete Dye layout, was contested in ever changing weather with the high winds in common.
Hill Country Tour members, Ramon Colen and Charles Mielak teamed up to take the Flight 14 Championship, with Ron Finnerty and Mark Miller notching another runner up spot in Flight 3.
Flight 14: Colen/Mielak, carded low second place honors during the first day scramble format, followed up with another runner up on day two and closed with the low round prizes on the final day, modified alternate shot. Three day total 278 was just enough to edge out the nearest team by one stroke for their first win at the Duel.
Flight 3: The San Antonio area pair of Finnerty/Miller, carded a low round 74 during the second day, best ball format to finish in the runner up spot. In the three years since the Duel has moved from Mesquite, NV to Las Vegas, Finnerty and Miller have two runner up finishes to go with their win in 2012. Prior to that, Mark won in 2011 with the late Zac Day and Ron finished third in the 2010 event with Lorne Fisher.

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (December 14, 2013) Winter Storm Cleon's icy impact to the north and west of the Hill Country one week earlier resulted in the postponement of the the Winter Classic - Hill Country at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort.
Breezy north winds on this Saturday created some challenging cross winds, but the 60 degree day was certainly welcome to the previous weeks frigid temperatures. Scott Harper of Ranger, TX, visiting from the Dallas Tour took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Castroville, TX member, Reagan Rothe, made his first start back on tour, after a number of years on hiatus, for the big win. Rothe, with an eagle on the par 4 - 6th helped make the difference in a two stroke victory over Texas Harper of San Antonio, TX. Rounding out the top three, San Angelo, TX player James White matched his T3 finish at the Championship @ Falconhead in mid November in his second event on tour since 2012.
Palmer Flight: After two runner up finishes in his last three outings, Gary Grizzle of Boerne, TX picked up his first win on tour. Starting on the eighth hole, Grizzle parred his first and last two holes to edge out a pair tied in the second spot. Killeen, TX resident, Stephen Armstrong and Paul Wuerdeman of San Antonio, TX, both with a couple of birdies on the round, shared the runner up finish.
Hogan Flight: Dallas Tour traveler, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX grabbed his ninth win on tour and second of the 2014 points season. Harper started well with three consecutive pars, finished nine and ten five over par but righted the ship, +3 over the next eleven holes with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st to finish out one stroke clear of John Hilgers from Wimberly, TX. Hilgers, with his second runner up finish in as many tries, stayed five strokes clear of first time tour player, Jeremy Jessop of San Antonio, TX rounding out the top three.
Sarazen Flight: Devin Brown of San Antonio, TX birdied the long par 5 - 18th to record his sixth win on tour. Two strokes back, Leander, TX member Joshua Douglas secured the runner up finish bouncing back from a tough eighteenth hole to finish his final three in +3. 18 year old Will Speck of Corpus Christi, TX, playing in his first event, cleared the fourth place finisher by six strokes.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Austin, TX player Michael Brewer became a two time winner on tour. Brewer, a winner at the 2013 two round Dallas Tour Championship @ The Tribute, birdied his second hole of the day, the par 4 - 6th to win by two strokes over Jim Nedry of Lago Vista, TX. Nedry's six pars on the day was enough for the runner up finish seven strokes clear of the pair of Jack Dillard of Midland, TX and San Antonio, TX member Richard Huyck sharing the third place position.
Jones Flight: Joe Tyson of Austin, TX carded his first win on tour after finishing no worse than third in his previous three starts. Aaron Seafous of Austin, TX coming off a T2 at the November Championship @ Falconhead, eagled the par 4 - 6th hole for the runner up spot, five strokes clear of Dallas Tour member, Douglas Pritchett of Fort Worth, TX.
Snead Flight: Myron Brown of Somerville, TX recorded his third win on tour with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 6th hole and finished two strokes clear of Mark Colwell of Selma, TX and Pflugerville, TX player Thomas Kerwin splitting the second and third place points. Kerwin's birdie on the par 4 - 12th was the only one of the day and landed him a flight and giant skin.

Scott R Chilcutt, Austin, TX (November 17, 2014) Falconhead Golf Club, just northwest of downtown Austin, played host to The Championship at Falconhead, the 2014 point season opener on the The Hill Country Tour.
Sharing the Sunday schedule with the Circuit of The Americas, US Grand Prix on the Formula 1 schedule made an early morning shotgun start more palatable, hoping to get everyone home before the some 300,000 race fans took to the streets. The caviar and champagne fans of F1 made it a challenge for the traveling players seeking hotel rooms, where normal $100 night rooms soared to over $1,300 steering most of the Dallas Tour members making the trip to Marble Falls and Burnet.
Fast greens, in the best shape we've seen them in years, with the typical native areas, playing as the course is marked made it imperative to hit them straight and to get it close on the green. Patrick Richardson, traveling from The Woodlands, TX edged out Boerne, TX member Gary Grizzle by a single stroke for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Bulverde, TX member Mark Miller doubled his first hole out of the gate, ended his front nine with a birdie, added two more at 15 and 18 for a one stroke advantage and his sixteenth win on tour, the first since the 2011 Texas Shootout at Redstone GC. Jacob Morton of Fort Hood, TX went out in one under par with birdies on 5, 7 and 9, but couldn't keep the lead coming back to Miller on his back nine. Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX, San Angelo, TX member James White and Tony Peppler of Dallas, TX shared the third place honors, three strokes back of Morton.
Palmer Flight: Senior Palmer Flight regular, Robert Lippert of Copperas, Cove, TX picked up his third win on tour over the combined flight, one stroke ahead of one half of the rest of the field. Another Senior player, Gary Grizzle of Boerne, TX picked up the second place gift card in a scorecard playoff with Dave Davlin and Ron Finnerty of San Antonio along with Killeen, TX member Stephen Armstrong just back from deployment all sharing the runner up finish.
Hogan Flight: Michael Campbell of New Braunfels, TX and Wimberly, TX member John Hilgers needed three extra holes to decide the contest where on the third playoff hole, Campbell picked up his second win on tour. Houston Tour member Gus Aldana finished just one stroke out of the playoff to round out the top three.
Sarazen Flight: Just one week depearted from a T2 finish at the first Major on the Am Tour schedule, the The Fall Classic at Tunica, Converse, TX player Ronnie Davis parred his final two holes to force a sudden death playoff with C.D. Dunem of San Antonio, TX. Back out to the tenth hole for the pair, Dunem, coming off a par the first time around finished off the playoff for his second win on tour and first since the 2012 Pensacola Open. Scott Thompson of Helotes, TX finished out the day one stroke back of the pair for the third place finish.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Nearby Austin, TX resident Homer Turbeville went out in plus one after five holes, with a birdie on the par 5 - 14th for a two stroke victory, his fourth on tour. Gene Rampy of Bastrop, TX finished one stroke clear of a pair tied up behind him. Tom West of Giddings,TX and Dallas Tour member Rick Allaire shared the third place honors.
Jones Flight: Houston Tour traveler, Patrick Richardson from The Woodlands, TX commanded a five stroke victory, his ninth on tour. Knotted up in the second place spot, Aaron Seafous and Joe Tyson both of Austin, TX shared the runner up finish.
Snead Flight: Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX visiting from the Dallas Tour, carded two birdies on the day for his eleventh win on tour. One stroke back, Myron Brown of Somerville, TX finished in the runner up spot after starting the day on the seventh hole with Cathay McGee of Houston, TX finishing in the show position.
