SIX OF TWELVE CHAMPIONSHIPS STAY IN THE HILL COUNTRY

Scott R Chilcutt, Austin, TX (August, 2, 2015)  The Texas Masters at Barton Creek welcomed players to the final Major Championship weekend before the National Championship and Senior National Championship break.  Texas Tour members, while a majority of the field, proved the local Austin, TX layout will be hard to come from out of state to take home the hardware.  In the 12 flights, all champions are members of one of the
 three Texas Tours and only three players out of 36 in the top three, were visiting tour members.  

Players in the field, contributed to the 50/50 raffle, raising more than $1300 for thee Feherty's Troops First Foundation.



RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  One stroke back after the Saturday round,  Gant Bills of Plano, TX, made up some ground on the Fazio Foothills course, with another four birdies to go with five the day before, but only enough ground to force a three way playoff.  Trophy Club, TX, player Andrew Braun, just outside of the final pairing made the biggest move, with four birdies of his own on the day.  First round leader, Cory Montgomery of Oklahoma City, OK, looked to have things locked up with two birdies and a -1 on the front, ran into trouble making the turn, but finished the last three holes even to get into the playoff mix.  On the first hole of the playoff, back to the par 4 - 10th, Bills would settle the Championship with a birdie to pick up his third win in his first season on tour.  Braun and Montgomery, both Major Champions in the 2015 points season would share the runner up spot.

Senior Championship Flight:  Recently promoted after his Senior Palmer Championship at the June Srixon Championship, Robert Lippert of Copperas Cove, TX, kept the ball rolling.  Lippert, with five birdies on the weekend, picked up his sixth win on the season, including three Major Championships.  Sugar Land, TX resident, Gordon Wagner carded an eagle at the par 5 - 15th on Sunday to make a run at the Championship, but fell short by the three strokes he started the day behind. It was Wagner's second runner up at a Major this season.  Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX made his Senior National Championship bid more official, with two birdies on the weekend rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:   Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX, led the field wire to wire to back up his Championship at the 2014 Texas Masters at Barton Creek.  It was Davlin's, seventeenth win on tour and fourth Major Championship.  Lewisville, TX player Clay Johnston, came from eight strokes back after his first round on the Fazio layout to share the runner up honors with Tony Eno of Austin, TX.

Senior Palmer Flight:   Dusty Rhodes of Deer Park, TX, manhandled the field from the very start.  Starting the final round, four strokes ahead, Rhodes widened the gap on Sunday, picking up his first win on the season, seventh on tour and fourth Major Championship. Vidor, TX, resident, Robert Corbello jumped from a first round third place position into the runner up spot, with three birdies on the day, while Michael Fee of Mansfield, TX, made his own move, with two birdies on the Sunday round to round out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Converse, TX, player, Ronnie Davis started the final round on the Crenshaw Cliffside course, three strokes out of the lead, but used his knowledge of the greens to close out the championship by two strokes.  For Davis, it was his third Major Championship on tour, all coming at the Texas Masters, where in 2011 he won at TPC San Antonio and 2009 when the event was contested only on the Crenshaw course at Barton Creek.  Playing in his first year on tour, Clift Dempsey of Catersville, GA became only one of three players outside the state of Texas to finish in the top three. A winner earlier in the year at the Srixon Championship at La Cantera, Rene Realme of San Antonio, TX, shot the flight's low round of the weekend to finish out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  George Smith of Magnolia, TX, held a slim two stroke overnight lead, just ahead of Scott Harris of Fort Worth, TX.  Making the final turn of the event, Smith moved ahead another stroke, but found trouble on two of his final eight holes to open the door for more holes.  Back out to the #10 hole on the Fazio Course, Smith would kick back into gear for a par and his first win at a Major and fifth on tour.  Harris would finish in the runner up spot, bettering his third place finish at the Arkansas Championship, with Wimberly, TX, player John Hilgers carding a flight low round for the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Boerne, TX, member, Rudy Cantu followed his Major win at the Srixon Championship @ La Cantera, for his second major in as many attempts and fourth win on tour this points season. Cantu, starting the final round on the tenth hole, overtook first round leader, Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX, on the front nine and never looked back.  College Station, TX, resident, Rick Smalley started the day, nine strokes out of the lead, making up ground to card the show place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Five strokes back after the Saturday round on the Fazio layout, Richmond, TX, player Greg Faubion, recorded the low flight round of the weekend on the Crenshaw course with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 17th to grab his first Major Championship, third win of the season and fourth on tour.  Charles Sagray of San Antonio, TX, and Houston Tour member, Mark Kirby of Bridge City, TX, both with a pair of birdies on the weekend shared the runner up honors.

Jones Flight:  Leader in the clubhouse after the Saturday round,  Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX looked to give up that lead after the par 5 - 16th, but followed with a birdie on the par 3 - 17th, which proved to be just enough for the Championship.  It was the third win on the season and second Major Championship after winning early in the year at Horseshoe Bay.  Spring, TX, member Joe Armstrong, finished just one stroke back, equaling his best finish on tour.  Sitting near the bottom of the leader-board after round 1, James Price of Portland, TX bounced back to round out the top three on the Crenshaw layout. 

Senior Jones Flight:  Four strokes out of the overnight lead, Cathay McGee of Houston, TX, made up just enough of the deficit to go to extra holes with Cypress, TX member Lee Isham.  On the first playoff hole, McGee would make par to pick up her second Major Championship after winning the 2014 Pinehurst Amateur.  For Isham it solidified his Senior National Championship spot, with the pair of Marcy Glidden of  Brookshire, TX and Wesley Chappel, FL, traveler, Micki Cuppett sharing the third place finish.

Snead Flight:  William Speck of Corpus Christi, TX, made it three in a row and four out of the last five, including the Major, Srixon Championship @ La Cantera his last time out. Starting the day seven strokes back, Speck shot the low round of the flight on Sunday to finish two strokes ahead of  Bobby Ashcraft of San Antonio, TX.  San Angelo, TX first year player, Douglas Taylor grabbed the final podium spot.

Senior Snead Flight:   Houston, TX, player Ray Bednar led from start to finish over the flight for his third win on the season and first Major Championship.  Bednar ended the championship, six strokes clear of Boerne, TX member Tom Hill with Carl Eaton of Conroe, TX taking the third place finish.

TPC San Antonio, The AT&T Oaks Course, closes the Hill Country season on Sunday, August 9th at the Hill Country Tour Championship.  Entries are closed, but potential spots are available on the waiting list.  

The Tribute Golf Links, closed since the floods in late May, should be in excellent conditions for the Dallas Tour Championship on August 22nd and 23rd.

Prelude to the Texas Masters at Barton Creek - Championship at Falconhead

Scott R Chilcutt, Austin, TX (July 31, 2015)  Setting the stage for the two day Major Championship for the Texas Masters at Barton Creek, a special Friday event was held to test and tune on the Hill Country Tour at Falconhead Golf Club in nearby Austin.  The course over the rolling Hill Country terrain, set up nicely for the practice rounds, while taking advantage of points and the prize fund.

Jimmy Clanin (Snead Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge", winning his flight playing a Srixon ball and will get a dozen sent to him for the win. Matching his win in the flight, Clanin went on to grab the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, by one stroke.

RESULTS: 

Championship Flight:  First year, Hill Country Tour player, Genaro Davila (d aa - v EE l aa), playing out of San Antonio, TX, looked flawless going out, with a birdie to finish his front nine in -1.  Davila, would stumble on a few holes, but add two more birdies on his round to pick up his third win on the season, stamping his National Championship qualification, pending his six round eligibility.  Four strokes back, Spring Branch, TX resident, Mark Miller, already a three time winner on tour, with the Srizon Major at La Cantera, settled for the runner up spot, with three birdies on the round with,  Jordan Massey of Killeen, TX, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  In a combined, Palmer, Senior Palmer flight, Senior, Bob Griffith of Cedar Park, TX, was sandwiched between a couple of Open players, knotted in the top spot.  Griffith started slow, but shot the best round on the back nine to advance to a playoff with San Antonio, TX player Dave Davlin and Tomball, TX, resident James Sheppeard.  Back to the course, Sheppeard, with four birdies on his first eighteen holes would prevail for his eighth win on the season, with the other two relegated to a share of the runner up honors.

Hogan Flight:  Close to the podium on a couple of occasions, in her first year on tour, Zoey DaneshFar of Trophy Club, TX, didn't shoot her low score of the season, but shot just enough to pick up her first win.   DaneshFar with a birdie on the par 3 - 4th hole, had a two stroke cushion making the turn, that proved to be just enough.  Darren Bufton of Bedford, TX, already a five time winner on the season, carded a pair of birdies on the round to finish two strokes back.  Southlake, TX, player Scott Striegel, matched his best finish in his first year on tour with the show place finish, with the help of three birdies on the round.

Senior Hogan Flight:  John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX, inching closer to a promotion back to the Senior Palmer Flight, shot an impressive + 1 on the front nine, with the help of two birdies and took the momentum to the back for his third win on the season and eleventh on tour.  Three strokes back, San Antonio, TX, player Paul Wuerdeman carded three birdies on his last ten holes to tie it up with Houston Tour member, Vernon Wells of Bellaire, TX, with a birdie of his own on the day to split the runner up finish.

Sarazen Flight:  San Antonio, TX, player Carlos Cruz, down by three strokes making the turn, finished +1 over the last three to pick up his eighth win on tour, first of the season and first since his promotion to the Sarazen Flight.  Rudy Cantu of Boerne, TX, a three time winner on the season, got into trouble coming to the stretch to finish in the runner up spot, with Dallas Tour member, Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Melvin Hill of Honolulu, HI, with family in the area, made the trip to the mainland, that would set the stage for a playoff with local Austin, TX, player Homer Turbeville. Turbeville, with consecutive birdies on the par 5 - 9th and par 4 - 10th would prevail after teeing it up again for the win. San Antonio, TX, player Charles Sagray would finish out the Championship in the third place spot.

Jones Flight:  Lloyd C Reid Jr of Dallas, TX, self proclaimed to do better at one day events, stayed on that streak, winning his fourth of the points season and seventh on tour, although one was a two day Major Championship in 2013 at the Battle for Homestead II.  Reid, tailing the field by three at the turn, would kick it into gear with a birdie on the par 5 - 12th for the one stroke win.  Houston Tour members, Randy Adcock of Vidor, TX with a birdie of his own on the 12th and Houston, TX, resident, Rick Halprin, with two birdies on the front nine would finish second and third respectively.

Snead Flight:  San Louis Obispo, CA, native, now residing in Pflugerville, TX, Jimmy Clanin has not stepped near the winners circle in his first year on tour.  Taking advantage of a caddie to smooth the nerves and settle the putting stroke, Clanin, would make two birdies coming to the clubhouse to command a three stroke victory.   Fresh off his second win on the season his last time out, Ray Bednar of Houston, TX, claimed the runner up finish with  Bobby Ashcraft of San Antonio, TX and San Angelo, TX player Douglas Taylor, with a birdie on the par 4 - 7th sharing the third place finish.

Flintrock Falls Does it Again - Austin / Nicklaus Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Lakeway, TX (July 11, 2015)  Flintrock Falls, one of three courses in The Hills of Lakeway Country Club complex in Northwest Austin hosted the annual Austin - Nicklaus Open on the Hill Country Tour.  Near the shores of Lake Travis, the spring has been kind to the course conditions.  To bring that into perspective, the lake level at Travis is an astounding +42' since our last outing.  While it's still -9' from a full pool, it's been years since the lake had as much water.

Flintrock Falls, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, has that "don't know where to hit it" layout.  With the exception of the par threes on the course, very few holes can you clearly see the green from the TEE.  For the visual deception off the tee's, comes just as much playing to the putting surface with green complexes that were very hard to read, making it a long day if you didn't strike the ball just right.

Bruce Beakley (Palmer Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge", winning his flight playing a Srixon ball and will get a dozen sent to him for the win. John Hilgers grabbed the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, by one stroke over Steve Trickle, both playing in the combined Hogan Flight.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Killeen, TX resident, Jordan Massey put together a solid front nine, even after six holes with a couple of birdies, stumbled on the par 5 - 8th, but rebounded with a birdie on the tight par 4 - 9th.  Massey wouldn't get his normal momentum changing play going on the back, but finished out with the win, his fourth in a row on five attempts this season.   One stroke back, Robert Lippert of Copperas Cove, TX, a recent graduate to the Senior Championship Flight, put a couple of birdies together on the round to grab the runner up finish.   North Las Vegas, NV, player Matthew Rischar, in the area for training, dropped in to round out the top three, just two strokes out of the lead.

Palmer Flight:  Houston Tour traveler, Bruce Beakley had the flight covered making the turn, made birdie on the par 4 - 10th and proved to be just enough.  Beakley, promoted after his last win in November 2014, picked up his first win with the new flight, second on the points season and eighth on tour. One stroke back, first time tour player, Justin Claiborne of San Angelo, TX, kept it close and carded the second place spot with Randy McGinnis of  San Antonio, TX, with the help of two birdies on the back nine, taking the show place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Employing a local caddie for the first time, John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX, took the advise over the blind course to heart, picking up his second win on the season and tenth on tour. Five strokes back, Allan Collier of Dripping Springs, TX, a two time winner on the season birdied his final hole of the day, the par 5 - 18th to command a runner up finish after Steve Trickel of Boerne, TX, matched the feat on the eighteenth. It was Trickel's, third, third place finish on the season.

Sarazen Flight:  First year member, John Schott of Marion, TX, made the best of birdies on the par 3 - 6th and par 5 - 13th to pick up his first win on tour.  Another first year player from Crystal City, TX, followed up the win at the Hill Country Open in late July, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st after seemingly losing the ball on his tee shot to the hazard.  Local player, Homer Turbeville of Austin, TX and Temple, TX, member Steve Westphal, with closest to the hole and birdie on the par 3 -12th shared the third place finish.

Jones Flight:  Coming out of the gate strong, local Lakeway, TX, player Donald Bebout was only +1 after six holes. Bebout, still with a flight lead making the turn ran into a disaster at the par 4 - 10th and could not rebound, finishing in the runner up spot.  Steve DiPaola of San Antonio, TX, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 8th, slid into the lead on the fifteenth hole and was able to keep the distance despite a coulple of tough holes on sixteen and seventeen to finish out the win.  New Braunfels, TX, player Gregg Singhaus carded his best finish on tour rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Houston Tour invader, Ray Bednar, came to Austin with a purpose.  Bednar, with ten events on the season and forty on tour, used the layout to command his first win on tour, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 4th.  Bobby Ashcraft of San Antonio,TX, with birdie on the par 3 - 15th and pairing partner, Austin, TX, resident, Christopher Cobb snarled back and forth with each other on the round, ultimately, finishing tied for the runner up finish.

Srixon Championship at La Cantera

Golf Channel AM Tour Staff, San Antonio, TX  (June 28, 2015) – Once the again the Golf Channel Am Tour descended on Texas Hill Country for another major championship, this time at the venerable LaCantera Resort in San Antonio for the Srixon Championship.   180 die hard Am Tour players, 156 from the Lone Star State alone, battled on two championship golf courses, not to mention the early Summer Texas heat in a spirited competition to crown 11 new flight champions.  

The LaCantera Resort Course, which played host to the Valero Texas Open in past years’ along with the Palmer Course provided a terrific backdrop for the weekend’s festivities.  Below are the highlights from another hard fought Srixon Championship at LaCantera:

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Spring Branch, TX, player, Mark Miller lapped a very dignified Championship Flight in posting a two day total of +1.  Coming in a distant second was Austin area member Mike Harkins of Cedar Park, TX.  The win was Miller’s third in a row and first major win of the 2015 season. 

Palmer Flight:  2014 3-time Major winner in the Hogan Flight, Houston area player Aaron Brougher stepped up to the plate in a big way with his first ever Palmer Flight win.  Brougher held on to his co-lead from the opening round to best another Houston area player, James Sheppeard, by one stroke to get the W.

Hogan Flight:  Rene Realme, a local product from San Antonio, TX, enjoyed some home cookin with a smooth four shot win over Leander, Texas’ Bryan Wood.  Overnight leader, Zoey DaneshFar from the Dallas area, couldn’t couple her stellar opening round of 76 with a strong 2^nd day, and faded with a final round 92.  Ms. DaneshFar however proved she’s more than a worthy competitor in the Hogan flight and has vowed to bring home a major victory next time out.

Sarazen Flight:  Rudy Cantu, from Boerne, TX, overcame a 3 shot deficit to win the Sarazen flight by 2 shots over overnight leader Ross Gonzalez from Hockley, TX.  Mr. Cantu’s final round score of 87 was enough to get the win on only his second major played in his Am Tour career. 

Jones Flight:  James Price, from the sleepy Texas coastal town of Portland was anything but tired as he won the Jones flight by 2 strokes over Spring, Texas’ Wayne Waldrep.  Price backed up his 2^nd place showing at the Red River Shootout at WinStar in May with his first major win on Tour.

Snead Flight:  Corpus Christi resident, William Speck, made the biggest move of the day in any flight when he came from a whopping 14 shots behind to post a two day total of 186 in besting Mico, TX, Charles Mielak by one shot.  Mr. Speck’s sterling final round score of 85 was the low round of the weekend in flight and just enough to get the job done.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Kansan Thomas Kass held an impressive 5 shot lead after Saturday’s first round.  Little did Mr. Kass realize the laying in the weeds, five shots back was Copperas Cove, TX, very own Robert Lippert.  To say Mr. Lippert ‘went low’ is a gross understatement.  In what has to be one of rounds the weekend in any flight, Mr. Lippert threw a little 75 at em to squeak out a one shot victory over the aforementioned Mr. Kass.  

Senior Hogan Flight:  Alan Collier of Dripping Springs, TX, and San Antonio, TX, player Paul Wuerdeman found themselves going extra holes to settle the Senior Hogan flight.  Deadlocked after 36 holes, Mr. Wuerdeman finally outlasted Mr. Collier with a par on the 2^nd playoff hole.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Olive Branch, MS,  Louis Ralph by no means extended an olive branch to his fellow Senior Sarazen flight combatants.   Mr. Ralph finished with a salty 77 on Sunday to overcome a stacked field, which included Jon Neff of Frisco, TX,  and Richmond, TX, player, Greg Faubion, by two strokes. 

Senior Jones Flight:  The feel good story of the Srixon Championship had to be one Randy Helcel of Lott, TX.  Mr. Helcel had the Championship’s only hole in one on Saturday, when he dunked 138 yard 7-iron on the 7^th hole of the Palmer Course.  Mr. Helcel rode his Saturday ace all the way to the finish line on Sunday, besting Houston’s David Sipe by two.

Senior Snead Flight:  The smallest flight of the weekend belonged to the Senior Snead flight.  The golf played however was by no means small, especially for Conroe, TX, resident Carl Eaton.  Mr. Eaton came up rather large with a comprehensive 16 shot win.  His sterling final round of 86 was more than enough to do the trick.
