Legendary Onion Creek - Hill Country Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Austin, TX (July 2, 2017)  After struggling with two years of major flooding along Onion Creek, The Hill Country Tour returned to the "Birthplace of the Senior PGA Tour",  Onion Creek Club on Sunday.  With greens still a little inconsistent on the waterlogged front nine, the course is clearly getting back to its one-time greatness.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $310, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $13,480 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  20-year-old, John Kellum of San Antonio, TX, made it three in as many attempts in his first year on tour.  Kellum, with birdies on the par 4 - 3rd and par 4 - 12th, finished the round + - 71 for a six-stroke advantage.  Spring Branch, TX, player Mark Miller, with five wins on the season took the runner-up spot, with Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX, making the best of two birdies on his round to round out the top three, two strokes back of Miller.

Palmer Flight:  Leander, TX, first-year player, Charles Guidry, picked up his second win on tour, following a pair of third-place finishes, including the National Championship qualifying spot at the San Antonio Open - Sonterra Major Championship.  Guidry, with two birdies on the round, finished four strokes clear of Austin, TX, player Gregory Powell.  Starting the round on the tenth hole, Powell fought back after being five down at the turn, with three birdies on his back to capture the runner-up finish.  Tied for the lead making the turn, Pflugerville, TX, member Justin Gorby, struggled to come to the clubhouse, rounding out the top three, equaling his best finish on tour.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Traveling Houston Tour member, Carl Christoph of Friendswood, TX, took a lead to the back nine after starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, but couldn't let up, when another Houston member, Tim Kozlowski of Humble, TX, charged coming to the clubhouse.  For Christoph, it was his Senior National Championship qualifying third win on the season.  Iraan, TX, player Doug Collins, with three wins of his own on the season, took home the final podium spot.

Hogan Flight:  Jim Puckett of Leander, TX, broke the 80 mark for only his second time on tour playing the back nine in even par for his fourth win on tour and third of the season, including the Major Championship at Texas Open - Horseshoe Bay in March.  Universal City, TX, player, JD Schott, a winner his last two times out, finished in the runner-up spot with two birdies on the day.  John Heintz, of San Antonio, TX rounded out the top three, his seventh third place finish of the season to go with a win at Port Aransas in January.

Senior Hogan Flight:  The Original Course at Onion Creek obviously fits the eye of Larry Susen an Austin, TX, resident.  Susen, a winner the last time we played the course in 2013, picked up his fourth win on tour and first of the points season with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 6th.  Cedar Park, TX, player Servando Perez, a three-time winner on the season,  with two birdies on his round finished behind Susen, wth Houston Tour traveler, Chris Neelley of Spring, TX rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Playing in his first year on tour, Cedar Park, TX, member Chris Bryant, picked up his second win in as many attempts.  Bryant took a one-stroke lead to the back nine and held on to that lead, finishing one stroke ahead of Douglas Galloway of Austin, TX and San Antonio, TX player CD Dunem, sharing the runner-up finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Joe Tyson of Austin, TX, picked up his ninth win on tour and first of the points season.  Tyson carded three birdies on the round to stay just one stroke clear of Boerne, TX, first-year player John Maywald.  Maywald, with top three finishes in his first two events on tour,  with Houston Tour member, Jim Craig of San Felipe, TX, taking the final podium finish spot.

Jones Flight:  Now residing in Austin, TX, Randy Adcock chalked up his second win in as many attempts.  Adcock, a 2010 Senior National Champion, made it his twenty-first victory on tour.  Three strokes back, Phil Lewis of San Antonio, TX, equaled his best finish of the season with a runner-up at the Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay Major Championship in March, with Los Angeles, CA, Tour Traveler, Johnny Lee, playing in his forty-second event of the points season, with six wins, rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Make it twenty-two for Javier Quintero of Houston, TX.  Quintero, on tour since 2009 and before, picked up his first win of the season, first win in The Hill Country since the 2012 event at La Cantera, and twenty-second on tour.  Four strokes back making the turn, Dan Oshea of Copperas Cove, TX, held on to that differential to pick up the second place finish, with Georgetown, TX, resident Dwain Smith taking the third place finish.
