Fall Championship - Round Rock - Hill Country Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Round Rock, TX (November 20, 2016)  Teravista Golf Club, on top of the hill in Round Rock, TX, over looks 30 miles of the Hill Country to the west.  The course, off the Hill Country schedule since October of 2014 because of deteriorating bunkers.  Since then the facility has rebuilt and or refurbished to make the track a fair challenge for those that end up in the hazard.

Jay Mills picked up the Tournament Champion trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, with a net 61, -11.  The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $380, bringing the year to date total from the Texas Tour local events to $14,890 contributed to the Foundation in 2016.

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight:   Whitney, TX, resident J.D. Price, picked up his eighth win, starting his third season on tour.  Price, tied up at the turn, would keep the ball in play over the final four holes to edge out local tour player, Jorge Rodriguez from Round Rock, TX, by a stroke.  Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX, rounded out the top three, three strokes back of Rodriguez.

Hogan Flight:  Dallas Tour traveler, Scott Striegel of Southlake, TX, matched Lorena, TX, resident Mitchell Bentley on front nine / back nine scores to force a playoff.  Bentley, with a birdie on the par 5 - 10th and Striegel with one of his own on the par 4 - 1st in regulation, it would be Bentley that got the best of the course scheduling, when they went back to #10 for the sudden death.  Bentley would win his first event on the first playoff hole with his second birdie of the day on the 10th.  John Heintz of San Antonio, TX, and Richardson, TX, player Sven Bock shared the third place honors just one stroke out of the playoff.

Senior Hogan Flight:  With the help of three birdies on his round, Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX, picked up his sixth win on tour.  Four strokes back, San Antonio, TX, resident, Paul Wuerdeman, with four birdies of his own on the day, took the runner-up spot, with fellow San Antonio member, Gary Grizzle rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Bedford, TX, traveler Darren Bufton, outlasted the large field in the flight to pick up his ninth win on tour.  Starting on the tenth hole, Bufton would take four strokes off his first nine total to finish three strokes ahead of a pair of Hill Country players knotted in the runner-up spot.  Jim Puckett of Leander, TX, with three birdies on his round and Killeen, TX, player A.J. Englerth, with two birdies of his own would share the second place finish.

Jone Flight:  Jay Mills of Austin, TX, nearly lapped the field for his second win on tour. Mills, with a birdie on the par 3 - 15th, finished twelve strokes clear of runner-up finisher, Larry Atchley of Kyle, TX, a winner his last time out in Houston.  Two strokes back of Atchley, Portland, TX, member James Price, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st took home the show place honors.

Senior Jones Flight:  Houston Tour members, sweep the top spots in the flight.  Terry Collins of Spring, TX, playing in his first event since early August, stayed steady to force a playoff with Brookshire, TX, member Marcy Glidden when they couldn't settle the score in regulation.  Back to the course for the sudden death, the pair would have to play three holes before Glidden would prevail, picking up her tenth win on tour. John Pickens of Montgomery, TX, finished just one stroke out of the playoff to round out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Ethan Blase of San Antonio, TX, is finally getting used to winning, and picked up his second championship in his last three attempts, for his third on tour.  Four strokes back, a winner his previous two attempts, Fort Worth, TX, member Douglas Pritchett, keeps carding top finishes, in the runner-up spot.  Dan OShea of Copperas Cove, TX and San Antonio, TX, member Gene Hanley, shared the third place finish one stroke out of second.

Fall Championship - Hill Country Golf Club

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (October 22, 2016)  The Hill Country Tour, made a Saturday stop at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort for the Fall Championship.  A scheduling snafu due to another courses issues with conditions, the Resort was in great fall condition, and beautiful weather only made it a bonus.

Mark Miller (Championship Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge."   Winning his own flight playing a Srixon ball, Mark will get a dozen sent to him for the win. Gary Grizzle picked up the Tournament Champion, presented by Carlisle's Engraving with a -3 - 69. The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $190, bringing the year to date total from the Texas Tour local events to $14,050 contributed to the Foundation in 2016.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Spring Branch, TX, player Mark Miller, notched his 23rd win on tour.  With the exception of 2012 and 2013, Miller has picked up a minimum of three wins each year since Golf Channel Am Tour records in 2009.  Miller with a birdie on the par 4 - 14th, was plenty to stay clear of second place finisher Robert Jackens of Salado, TX.  Third place finisher,  Woodway, TX, member Billy Weaver, made up for the show place finish with birdies on the par 4 - 2nd and par 4 - 4th, that put him in the skins game.

Palmer Flight:  Mike Harkins of  Cedar Park, TX, was able to pick up a win in the condensed field, when what was set to be a three-person flight, fell short with a player not able to make the tournament.  Harkins picked up his fourth win on tour, with Terry Jackson of George West, TX, rounding out the top two.

Hogan Flight:  Coming off a couple of tough years in the Senior Palmer Flight, Gary Grizzle of San Antonio, TX, may be on his way back to that flight, with a commanding nine-stroke victory.  Portland, TX, member Timothy VanLandingham, the 2016 Points Champion in the Senior Hogan Flight, birdied the par 5 -17th for the runner-up finish with three-time player Mitchell Bentley of Lorena, TX, taking the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Floresville, TX, player Cody Prescott, playing in his third event on tour, found his way to the winners circle by seven strokes.  Senior Flight player Terry Dennis of Schertz, TX, grabbed the runner-up finish, with Joshua Douglas, the 2016 Sarazen Flight Champion, from Leander, TX, just one stroke back.

Jones Flight:  Lou Fox of Horseshoe Bay, TX, made the most of her first event on tour, winning the event with a single stroke advantage over, San Antonio, TX, member Larry Harper. Ethan Blase of San Antonio, TX, a Snead Player, combined with the group, rounded out the top three.

SKINS:

Giant SKINS:  ($46/each)  1 -- Billy Weaver, Woodway, TX; Mark Miller, Spring Branch, TX; Terry Jackson, George West, TX; Brian Cox, Killeen, TX; Joshua Douglas, Leander, TX.

Championship / Palmer / Hogan:  ($37/each)  2 -- Terry Jackson, George West, TX. 1 -- Billy Weaver, Woodway, TX; Mark Miller, Spring Branch, TX; Timothy VanLandingham, Portland, TX; Brian Cox, Killeen, TX; Gary Grizzle, San Antonio, TX.

Sarazen / Jones:  ($35/each)  2 -- Tim Miller, Shavano Park, TX. 1 -- Terry Dennis, Schertz, TX; Joshua Douglas, Leander, TX; Aaron Seafous, Austin, TX; Cody Prescott, Floresville, TX; Larry Harper, San Antonio, TX; Dan OShea, Copperas Cove, TX.

CLOSEST TO THE HOLE:

Flight Champions Awarded at Tour Championship - Hill Country Tour

9 of 12 First Time Champions Crowned on the Hill Country

Davlin - Campbell - Smith Repeat

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (September 1, 2016)  Hill Country Tour Players, finished out a strong 2016 Points Season at the Tour Championship at La Cantera in August.   Setting up for the National Championship and Senior National Championship in September, here is how the Champions were able to pick up the year end awards, including a customized and personalized staff bag from Club Glove.

Championship Flight:  First year San Antonio, TX, tour member Ernesto Beyer, edged out long time member Mark Miller by 192.5 points for the Championship.  Playing in nine events on the season, Beyer compiled four wins, including the May Tiburon Amateur Major Championship in Naples, FL, in a playoff.

Senior Championship Flight: Starting the points season at the San Diego Open, Daniel Desilets of Kermit, TX, headed east in mid January to solidify his season with a win at the TPC Sawgrass Open playing in a combined flight of 15 players.  Competing in thirteen events on the season, Deslilets didn't finish out of the top ten, and was only out of the top five, three times.  We look forward to watching him compete at the Senior National Championship, in Innisbrook, where he'll try to best his T7 Finish in 2013 at PGA West.

Palmer Flight:  Continuing to move his last time to NOT win a Championship on the Hill Country Tour into the past, Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX, notched his sixth in a row.  Four wins on the season, including the Winter Championship at Innisbrook and the Houston Open Major Championships bring his total career wins to 23.  Davlin amassed 2,075 points on the season and will head to the National Championship to defend his Major Championship win in December.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Doug Collins of Iraan, TX, picked up two wins on the season, but none bigger than the combined Palmer Flight at the Tour Championship.  With two sub 80 rounds, Collins won by two strokes over a strong field to pick up the maximum points for his first Tour Championship Title and his seventh win on tour. Doug will travel to Florida to compete in his third Senior National Championship at Innisbrook.

Hogan Flight:  With recently promoted Les Costales of Austin, TX, nipping on his heals, New Braunfels, TX, Michael Campbell finished the tour Championship in the fourth place spot.  It would prove to be just enough to win his second consecutive Flight Championship by a mere 32 1/2 points.  Campbell with two wins on the season, both coming on the west coast, will be looking to better his ninth place finish in the 2015 National Championship next week.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Portland, TX, member Timothy VanLandingham proved it doesn't take wins for a Flight Championship, but certainly requires consistent finishes.  VanLandinham, with a win in July at the Briggs Ranch Championship, put himself into the hunt with four top two finishes, including top fives at two Major Championships and outpaced four time winner on the season Paul Wuerdeman by 70 points.  Timothy, will make the trip to the Senior National Championship for the first time this year.

Sarazen Flight:  Joshua Douglas of Leander, TX, picked up his National Championship qualifying T3 at the Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay.  Following up with a win at the May, Spring Branch Classic,  Douglas with the help of promotions from the flight, edged out CD Dunem of San Antonio, TX, by 70 points for his first Flight Championship.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Unable to join us at the Tour Championship at La Cantera, Donald Bebout of Lakeway, TX,  previously collected plenty of points for the Flight Champion award and did it early in the points season.   Bebout, a winner in October at the Grand Cypress Challenge Major Championship, added another in LaQuinta, CA in June, to become another first time Flight Championship winner.

Jones Flight:  Playing in eleven events on the season, Melissa Wood of Leander, TX, jump started her points Championship with a runner up finish at the Hall of Fame Classic Major Championship in Florida, then added her first Major Championship win at the Texas Masters at Barton Creek, but then needed to finish well at the Tour Championship.  Wood led after the first day at The Palmer Course, setting her up for the year end award, with a T4 finish at the event.

Senior Jones Flight:  After finishing the year end points 7th and 6th respectively over the past two seasons, Phil Lewis of San Antonio, TX, picked up his game.  Lewis with one win on the season at the Memorial Weekend Championship at Pine Dunes on the Dallas tour, added a career best Major Championship finish at the Texas Masters at Barton Creek to become another first time Flight Champion winner on the tour.  Lewis will travel to the Tampa, FL area to compete in the Senior National Championship, also another first of his career.

Snead Flight:  Pflugerville, TX, member Jimmy Clanin, won his first two times out in the fall.  Adding two more wins on the season including the Tour Championship, Clanin would also card a third and three fourth place finishes on the year at Major Championships to pace the field by over 400 points.

Senior Snead Flight:  Dwain Smith, the 2013 Flight Champion, picked up two wins on the season, but none more important than the 210 point Tour Championship at La Cantera where he edged out Dan O'Shea for the points title.  Smith, now with nine wins on his career adds another year end award.

Hill Country Tour, PLAYER OF THE YEAR, presented by HIGGINBOTHAMThe special award was set up and presented by Higginbotham, a Business Insurance and Financial Services Company that services the state of Texas with home offices in Fort Worth.  The player from each tour in the state selected by the committee, with feedback from the membership that met a series of criteria, including having been promoted and continued The Journey to Better by excelling in the new flight, playing in the Tour Championship and attending the National / Senior National Championship in the new flight.

2016 Hill Country Player of the Year:  Playing in his second year on tour, Nacho Orozco of San Antonio, TX, started the year at the TPC Sawgrass Open Major Championship with a top 10 finish.  He then followed up with his second win on tour at the Port Aransas Open in January, then a runner up at the Myrtle Beach Classic Major Championship in March.  Clearly looking strong in the points, Orozco, piled on with the Championship at the Triburon Amateur in May and that would be all she wrote for the Sarazen Flight.  With a points adjustment and Journey to Better Flight Promotion on June 2nd, Nacho would compete in two more Major Championships, before finishing T2 at the Texas Masters at Barton Creek, which took him over the top in votes for the top spot.  We look forward to following Nacho at the National Championship next week as he continues the Journey to Better.

Upcoming Texas Events:

Off to the National Championship from September 13th - 16th and Senior National Championshipcontested September 19th - 22nd, many players from around the tour will compete for the top prize of the season.

Fall events and 2017 points schedule are being added now, look out for the opportunity to get a jump start on the next season.

Hill Country Finishes the Points Season with a Bang!

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (August 14, 2016)  La Cantera Hill Country Resort set the stage for the Hill Country Tour Championship. Saturday we spent the day at The Palmer Course then on to the Sunday finale at the Resort Course.  Incredibly cool temperatures were accompanied by occasional light rains on Saturday, much the same on Sunday with only one down pour that brought into question the conclusion.  In the end, players enjoyed record "LOW" temperatures over the weekend, and everyone was able to complete the 36 hole event.

Nikolas Mabry picked up the Tournament Champion, presented by Carlisle's Engraving with a -4 - 139, edging out Preston Miller with a -3 - 140 for the weekend.  The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $310, bringing the year to date total from the Texas Tour local events to $12,420 contributed to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Coming from two strokes off the lead starting the Sunday round, Niko Mabry of San Antonio, TX, carded four birdies on his final round to pick up his second win on tour.  First round leader, San Antonio, TX, member Genaro Davila birdied four holes on his final round, but ended up just two strokes shy of the victory.  Ernesto Beyer, making a clean sweep of San Antonio players, picked up the year end Flight Champion award and third place honors.  Kermit, TX, member Dr. Daniel Desilets was the high finishing Senior Championship Flight player and Flight Champion for 2016, finishing in the fourth place spot.

Palmer Flight:  Iraan, TX, Senior Palmer Flight player, Doug Collins birdied three holes at The Palmer Course to set him up for the final round.  Collins, tied up with San Antonio, TX, player Ron Finnerty after the day, played the final round in similar fashion to finish out his second win on the season and  his seventh on tour.
Finnerty a mainstay on The Hill Country Tour, took the chance of being promoted to the Championship Flight, to win the low Palmer Flight Honors just two strokes back.  Derrick Mathews of Killeen, TX, jumped into a tie for third with his final round  + 9 - 81 bringing him into the share of third with Dave Davlin of San Antonio, TX.

Hogan Flight:  Rene Realme of San Antonio, TX,  led wire to wire for his second win on the season and his tenth on tour.  Realme, with a single stroke advantage after the round at the Palmer Course, extended the lead on Sunday over a pair tied up in the runner up spot.  Cedar Park, TX, player Les Costales and Leander, TX, member Bryan Wood, split the second place finish five stokes back.

Senior Hogan Flight:  San Antonio, TX, resident, Paul Weurdeman a winner the last time the tour visited the two courses at the 2015 Srixon Championship, led the field after the Saturday round, with just enough cushion to pick up his fourth win on the year.  Steve Wade, of Boerne, TX, carding the only birdie of the flight on the par 5 - 14th on Sunday finished just two strokes back.  Portland,TX, player Timothy VanLandingham, made a charge on Sunday, with the flight low final round to share the third place honors with Bob Tuttle of Kingsland, TX.

Sarazen Flight:  Dallas Tour invaders hog all the podium spots in the flight.  Richardson, TX, player Sven Bock, in a heated points battle on the Dallas Tour, made the best of the 1/2 point affair for outsiders when he lead from wire to wire for his fourth win on the season.  Hard charging, Fort Worth, TX, player Preston Miller, with the flight low round on Sunday, finished in the runner up spot, with Michael Hill, a three time winner on the season, from Rockwall, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Out of the winners circle since March, 2015, Larry Viktorin of Wharton, TX, finished his round in the heaviest rain of the weekend, and held out for a seven stroke victory.  First year Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, player Ben Maytubby, in the third spot after his Saturday round, took three strokes off on Sunday to jump into the runner up finish, his best on the season.  Eight strokes back from Maytubby, Austin, TX, member Joseph Tyson and Michael Bell of Pearland, TX, split the third place honors.

Jones Flight:  In the final pairing on Sunday, despite being seven strokes back, San Antonio, TX, player Bobby Ashcraft, promoted on August 1st, made the best of a birdie on the par 4 - 9th, his final hole  of the day to pick up his third win on the season.  With three birdies on the weekend, William Speck of Corpus Christi, TX, and San Antonio, TX, resident Carlos Gloria, with a pair of birdies on Sunday, shared the runner up finish, three strokes back.

Senior Jones Flight:  The second first time winner of the day after a recent promotion, Montgomery, TX, traveler, Michael Pierce, stayed on a roll, picking up his seventh win on tour by only a single stroke over Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX. Fleming, with birdie on the par 3 - 17th, got it to within one heading to his final hole, but could only match Pierce, settling for the runner up spot.  Playing in only his second event on the season, Carrollton, TX, player Scott Sears, had a rough go of it on Sunday after sharing the overnight lead to finish third.

Snead Flight:  Locked in a three way tie after the Palmer Course round on Saturday, Jimmy Clanin of Pflugerville, TX, put together the only sub 100 round of the weekend in the flight on Sunday to pick up his fourth win on the season, securing his Flight Champion status.  Six strokes back, Charles Watson of Llano, TX, captured the second place spot, with Selma, TX, player Mark Colwell with two birdies on the weekend, rounding out the top three.

Senior Snead Flight:  Georgetown, TX, member Dwain Smith, held on to an overnight two stroke advantage to win his second event of the season and first Tour Championship.  Dan OShea of Copperas Cove, TX, could only make up one stroke of the deficit on Sunday to finish second, with Harker Heights, TX, player Felix Galvez and Pasadena, TX, resident Robert Vespa, sharing the third place honors.
