Hill Country Tour Opens the 2018 Points Season

Scott R Chilcutt, Round Rock, TX (October 15, 2017)  Situated high above the outlet mall in Round Rock, with self-proclaimed views of over 50 miles of The Hill Country,  sits Teravista Golf Club.

One thing that everyone that has ever set foot on the property can attest to is that the wind can blow.  That wind, generally has two directions, out of the south or north, and on this day, we got the beginning of a cold north front blowing across the plains, that made its appearance about 1/2 through the tee times.  With great course conditions, tricky pin placements and cool weather, the course played true to its windy form.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $340, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $19,800 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Off to a great start with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st, Breland Holifield of Colorado Springs, CO, trudged along for the final seventeen holes, only to end up in a sudden-death playoff with Lake Charles, LA, resident Danny Engel.  Back to the first hole for the playoff, the pair would finish just as they had the first time around, with Holifield picking up the Championship one stroke up.  Engel would settle for the runner-up finish, with Billy Weaver of Woodway, TX, three strokes back, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Starting his second year on tour, Round Rock, TX, local Rodney Baumgartner, one stroke back making the turn, stayed the course on the back nine to pick up his second win on tour.  Baumgartner,  with three birdies on the round, cleared, Crystal River, FL, member Wendall Sheffield, with two birdies of his own, by two strokes.  Two strokes back of Sheffield, JD Price of Whitney, TX, leading after his front nine, would settle for the third-place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Despite carding, a ten on the par 5 - 8th, first-time player Leven Miller of Cibolo, TX, rebounded to win his first event by a stroke.  Miller picked up the Championship with two birdies on the front nine, and stayed clear of Helotes, TX, player Scott Thompson and Fort Worth, TX, traveler, Jeff Workman, sharing the runner-up finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Allan Collier of Austin, TX, made the turn with a one-stroke advantage with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 9th.  Collier, went to the back nine, with three straight pars, added a couple of bogies but stayed out of the big numbers to cruise to a four-stroke victory, his seventh on tour.  Cedar Park, TX, player Servando Perez, finished in the runner-up spot with a birdie on the par 5 - 16th and Jerry Smith of Salado, TX, rounded out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Two strokes out of the action making the turn, Carlos Cruz, of San Antonio, TX,  played the back nine +3 - 39  for his tenth win on tour since starting in 2011.  One stroke back, Norm Gosselin, of Odessa, TX, with two birdies on his round, took home the runner-up finish with Cedar Park, TX, local Chris Bryant carding the third-place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Beginning the day on the par 5 - 10th, Randy Helcel of Barclays, TX, carded two birdies in his first four holes to set the standard.  Helcel, with only a slim one-stroke advantage at that point, played the back nine in +4 - 40 to pick up his fourth victory on tour.  Three strokes back, Fort Worth, TX, player Buddy Williams, finished in the runner-up spot with Michael Hirsch of Giddings, TX, off the tour since late in 2013, rounding out the top three, with a near hole in one on and birdie on the par 3 - 11th,

Jones Flight:  Little Elm, TX, player Garrett Tidman, playing in a limited number of events with new family responsibilities, birdied his first hole out of the gate, the par 5 - 10th, made the turn one stroke clear and then cruised to a five-stroke victory.  For Tidman, it was his eighth win on tour, with Andres Santos of Pflugerville, TX, and newly promoted Abilene, TX, player Kevin Crosson sharing the runner-up finish.

Senior Jones Flight:  Michael Page of Burnet, TX, took some time to get into the rhythm of the day but made the turn with plenty of room to spare to pick up the Championship.  Page, finished four strokes clear of runner-up Wylie, TX, traveler Jeff Ackerman, SR with San Antonio, TX, member Phil Lewis eight strokes back of second in the third-place finish.

Snead Flight:  Coming off a win the day before at Cypress Lakes, in the Houston area, Robert Vespa of Pasadena, TX, moved directly out of the flight.  Vespa, with a self-prescribed, "OK" round, nearly lapped the field with a  +16 - 88, seven strokes clear of runner-up finisher Dan O'Shea of Copperas Cove, TX.  rounding out the top three, San Antonio, TX, member Gene Hanley finished just three strokes back of O'Shea.
