San Antonio Masters - Dominion Country Club

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (June 19, 2017)  The San Antonio Masters @ The Dominion Country Club, named for a Spring scheduled date was hampered by weather issues in the past.  2016 found a reschedule in late June that was more to the liking of the players, so 2017 found a similar time frame.  Bounce in beautiful weather, possibly a little hotter than some would have preferred, but dry it was, for a great Monday on the Hill Country Tour.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $260, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $12,700 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  One stroke back at the turn, Ron Finnerty of San Antonio, TX, battled into a one stroke advantage over fellow San Antonio, TX, player John Kellum after fourteen holes.  Kellum would birdie the par 4 - 15th, to go back to even, the pair would then match scores until the final hole of the day, where both made a mess of it, but Kellum would prevail for his second win in as many attempts on tour, by one stroke.  Rusty Lippert of Copperas Cove, TX, would birdie the par 5 - 18th to round out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Promoted just before the Tour Championship, in 2016, JD Schott of Universal City, TX, has been trudging along until his head caught up to his game at Tapatio Springs on June 3rd.  Schott, with a birdie on the par 3 - 15th won his second event in as many attempts with sub 80 rounds and fifth on Tour.  Four strokes back, two-time 2017 winner, Jim Puckett of Leander, TX, settled for the runner-up spot, with Dominion member, Jesse Guerra of San Antonio, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  After taking a break from the tour at the end of his 2016 Dominion round, Allan Collier of Dripping Springs, TX, put a new face on his play in 2017 and has been trending toward a win ever since.  Collier, with a skinless eagle on the par 5 - 7th, added a birdie on the par 5 - 18th to solidify his first win on tour since August of 2015 and fifth win on Tour.  Twp strokes back, Waco, TX, resident Kyle Lewie, picked up his third runner-up finish on the season with Houston Tour traveler, Chris Neelley of Spring, TX, two strokes back in third.

Sarazen Flight:  With his last win on tour coming at The Dominion Country Club in April of 2015, San Antonio, TX, Tour member Xavier Bardy, used those memories to grab his twelfth win of his career.  Staying away from the big numbers Bardy cleared second place finisher,  San Antonio, TX, player Ricardo Cardenas by four strokes.  Relegated to the final podium spot, Angel Morales, also from San Antonio, TX, a winner at the Prelude to the San Antonio Open, took home the third place finish.

King of Country Brings Out the Best - Tapatio Springs Golf Club

Scott R Chilcutt, Boerne, TX (June 3, 2017)  Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort set on a beautiful piece of property just west of Boerne, TX made its way on to the Tour schedule.  For years, the golf club, was simply not up to par, with what players have come to expect as a tournament venue on the Golf Channel AM Tour.

Textron Financial Group rescued the resort out of bankruptcy in 2011, then came to a group of investors that included George Strait, the legendary "King of Country".   , Millions of Dollars later, along with Golf Course Architect Tripp Davis, and low and behold, Golf, Inc. named the course, the most improved in the country, in December of 2016.

Excellent course conditions, along with mild cloudy skies to go with a few sprinkles set up the day for a great experience on the Golf Channel AM Tour - Hill Country Tour schedule.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $300, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $10,710 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  First-time player, John Kellum of San Antonio, TX, made it all about him, in the limited field.  Kellum carded two birdies on the day, to finish with a +3 - 75.  Making his first start since November, Woodway, TX, player Billy Weaver took home the runner-up finish.

Palmer Flight:  Schertz, TX, member Paul Gorman, took home the Flight hardware with his tournament low round -1 - 71.  Gorman, with pars on the first eleven holes, made birdie on the par 4 - 12th, followed by a bogey on thirteen, then added another birdie on the par 3 -17th to win his second championship on tour.  Danna Hoover of Burnet, TX, with two birdies of his own on the round, grabbed the runner-up finish by one stroke over Spring, TX, traveler Aaron Brougher and Chad Maytubby of local, Fair Oaks Ranch, sharing the third place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Doug Collins, of Iraan, TX, continued his winning ways, nearly lapping the field, for his third win of the season and second in as many attempts, after picking up the Major Championship at Sonterra.  Collins, with three birdies, finished ahead of newly promoted Senior Hogan Flight player, Gary Grizzle, of San Antonio, TX, in the runner-up spot.
