Soupy at The Bandit - Fall Open New Braunfels

Scott R Chilcutt, New Braunfels, TX (November 12, 2017)  The Bandit Golf Club, off the schedule for a few years, hosted the Fall Open - New Braunfels on the Hill Country Tour.

Overcast skies would be an understatement, simply stated those skies we're down at surface level, leaving a light drizzle on all the player's clothes and equipment for more than half of the day.  Then came the raindrops that would build to a steady wetness, bringing the last half of the field to play through a drench.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $380, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $21,080 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Copperas Cove, TX, member Robert Lippert, literally ran away from the field.  Starting the day on the tenth hole, Lippert, made three birdies on his first nine holes, taking a seven-stroke lead to the back, where he put together eight straight pars and capped it off with a birdie on the par 4 - 9th to command a fifteen stroke lead.  Mark Miller of Spring Branch, TX, was able to hold on to the runner-up finish, one stroke clear of first-time San Marcos, TX, player Ty Brecher, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Nathan Douglas of Georgetown, TX, made the turn two strokes clear.  Douglas, with a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd, then extended the lead to five to pick up his second win, starting his second season on tour.  Pflugerville, TX, player Justin Gorby, with two birdies on his round, picked up the second place finish, with Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX, taking home third.

Hogan Flight:  Cibolo, TX, resident Leven Miller, became a two-time winner, in his second event on tour.  Miller took a big lead to the back nine after starting the round on the par 4 - 10th, extended the lead with a pair of consecutive birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, before finishing his last two holes of the day +6.  Two strokes back, John Hickman of Richardson, TX,  made an eagle three on the par 5 - 3rd to charge up the leaderboard, finishing alone in second place, with San Antonio, TX, player John Heintz rounding out the top three, with a birdie of his own on the round.

Sarazen Flight:  Greenville, TX, player Michael Hill, made birdie on his first hole out of the gate, to set up a pair of 42's for his seventh win on tour and second of the points season.  Three strokes back, San Marcos, TX, first time tour player Tommy Mobley, put the closest to the hole on the par 3 - 2nd to good use, making birdie, to finish in the runner-up spot, with Carlos Cruz, of San Antonio, TX, taking home the show place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Playing in only his second event back on tour after sitting out since the 2013 season, Michael Hirsch of Giddings, TX, got to the top of the podium.  Hirsch made the turn with a four-stroke lead and was able to hang on for his third win on tour and first since July of 2011 at The Bandit for the Austin / San Antonio Tour Championship.   One stroke back, Natchitoches, LA, traveler Douglas Key, made the best of a birdie on the par 3 - 17th for the second place finish, with Tom Stockton, of Grand Prairie, TX, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Pflugerville, TX, second-year member, Andres Santos, carded a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd to pick up his first win on tour.  Four strokes back, the pair of Alvin Mills of Leander, TX, and Corpus Christi, TX, resident Bill Speck shared the runner-up finish.

Snead Flight:  Playing in the rain for most of the round and just barely finishing in daylight, the Snead Flight went to John Franklin of San Antonio, TX.  Franklin made the most of seven pars in his round to pick up the win over Selma, TX, player Mark Colwell, and Mike Murphy of Corrigan, TX, sharing the second place honors.
