Scott R Chilcutt, Burnet, TX (July 15, 2017) With weather delays holding up playing over the previous two weekends in North Texas, the string continues in The Hill Country. While the field was on the course, and some flights finishing up the round, pop up storms with lightning brought the play to a halt, requiring course evacuation on two occasions.
In the end, most of the players were able to finish, with just a few opting to hit the road with other afternoon/evening engagements.
The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $310, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $13,790 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.
RESULTS:
Championship: Down three strokes making the turn, Copperas Cove, TX, player Rusty Lippert made the most of three birdies coming to the clubhouse to force a playoff with John Kellum of San Antonio, TX. Back the course for the sudden death playoff after the first lightning delay, the duo would need more holes when Lippert holed out a 20' for par. Then came another course, evacuation, which stalled the ultimate title another 30 minutes or so before Kellum would prevail with a par on the par 4 - 2nd. For Kellum, it was the fourth win in as many attempts on tour. Rounding out the top three, first-time player, David Peak of Georgetown, TX went even par through his first fourteen holes before struggling on the 15th and 16th. Peak would turn it around with a birdie on the par 4 - 17th but fell one stroke short of making the playoff.
Palmer: Burnet, TX, local Danna Hoover, and Georgetown, TX, regular at Delaware Springs, Nathan Douglas, would swap the lead through the first thirteen holes, when they went back to all square. Hoover, then grabbed a five stroke lead but gave back one on the 16th, then another three on the par 4 - 17th, but Douglas was only able to scratch back to within one stroke. For Hoover, it was his second win on tour and first of the season, after taking the Major Championship at Horseshoe Bay, in 2016. San Antonio, TX, resident Gary Grizzle carded the flight low back nine to round out the top three.
Hogan: Larry Susen of Austin, TX, fresh off a win at Onion Creek his last time out, carded two birdies in his first three holes, to take a one stroke lead making the turn to the back nine. Steady par's his next four holes, Susen would widen the gap to five strokes before running into trouble over his final five where he thought he lost the Championship when Kingsland, TX, member Bob Tuttle finished out his round strong but fell short by a stroke. For Susen, it was his fifth win on tour and second of the year. Two strokes back of Tuttle, Cisco, TX, player Manny Martinez, a winner just up 287 at the Battle at Blanco in May, finished in the third place spot.
Sarazen: Haslet, TX, player Burnie Rodgers started the day with a double on the first hole, but followed with two birdies and a string of pars to take a four stroke lead to the back nine. Rodgers struggled at times on the back and finished his round with a triple on the par 4 - 18th, but in spite of himself finished out the Championship with a three stroke cushion. For Rodgers, it was his first win on the season in twenty-nine attempts and his seventeenth on tour. Steve Hamilton of Leander, TX, a three-time winner on the season, finished in the runner-up spot with Randy Helcel of Lott, TX, and Dripping Springs, TX, member Gary Hatter sharing the final podium spot.
Jones: The field couldn't stay with Abilene, TX, player Judy Harris. Harris took a three stroke lead making the turn, but that was just the beginning, the end came, with two birdies and -2 over the final five holes to pick up her second win on tour. Michael Page, a local Burnet, TX, two-time winner on tour, settled for second place, with Georgetown, TX, player Evan Kirkpatrick, rounding out the top three.
Snead: James Castellano of Waco, TX, wouldn't let car troubles get to him after just making his tee time. Castellano carded a birdie on the par 3-7th and picked up his second win in four attempts on tour. Seven strokes back, Abilene, TX, traveler Kevin Crosson, made the best of two birdies on the back nine for the runner-up finish, with Dan O'Shea of Copperas Cove, TX, finishing third.

Tour members from around the country compete at the Final Major Championship weekend in Texas; First at the Championship at Falconhead - Prelude to the Texas Classic on Friday, July 28th, with a registration deadline on Friday, July 21st. Then off to the Texas Classic - Barton Creek on Saturday, July 29th and Sunday, July 30th.
The Houston Tour gets ready for two events in three days; First up, The Woodlands for the Player Championship on Wednesday, July 19th, then players will sprint to the Mont Belvieu Open, on Saturday, July 22nd at Eagle Pointe Golf Club.
After a stop on Monday, July 17th at TPC Craig Ranch, the Dallas Tour members, will get a shot at the Stonebriar Championship - Fazio course on August 7th.
